Speedometer cable replacement help

iblooney

Hi all, The plastic end on my speedometer cable (that connects to the fork tube gearbox) has broken. Is there a fix for that? If not, it appears that replacing the "outer-sheath" and "inner" cable is easy to do.

Questions: 1.) can it be done by just reaching up under the fairing and instrument cluster? or 2.) will I have to disassemble the front faring? and 3.) any unexpected things I may encounter?

Thanks in advance.

You *may* be able to reach the speedo head, if you have small hands, but depending how securely the fitting is fastened, you may have trouble loosening it without using pliers. There is no good fix for the plastic thingy. That is a very common break point, as it will crack the thin plastic collar very easily if over tightened. So take it easy on the new one! You shouldn't need to replace the inner cable, unless it's frayed.

I found that you can get to the speedometer end of the cable by removing the windshield, black front cover "with Honda emblem" and the plastic cover over the instrument panel (eleven screws and about five minutes work). This will reveal the cable from above. It's still a little tricky to get to because of the angle, but seems to be much easier than reaching up from below.
