Has anyone noticed at highway speeds that the speedometer is way off? I was riding back from Myrtle Beach yesterday and i got my father with is GPS to see the actual spped were going and at 75MPH my speedometer was saying 85mph is this common or is there something wrong with my bike.

Yes. It's kind of a built in saftey measure :D .

This topic has been discussed before. There are infos in this forum and the search function will tell you more.

Tried it didnt find anything may have put in wrong i'll try again thanks:D

I have a GPS, and I'm usually showing 10% faster on my speedo than my GPS. I agree, built in safety measure.

I'm curious what it would take to calibrate the speedo to read properly. Has anyone attempted this?

I was riding along one of the new Civics, and that big digital speedo was reading just over 60mph. My speedo was reading just over 60mph.

So I dunno, either my speedo reads ok, or all Hondas are off. :)

I know that the speedo in my Accord is pretty darned accurate according to my GPS. One of these days, I'll get a GPS that can fit on my bike and be able to compare.

There's a device called a "speedo healer" that lets you adjust the speedometer, which is electronic (even if it has an analog display.) It's about a hundred dollars, as I recall. You could use the forum search, or your internet search engine to find one. I think that California Sport Touring distributes them here.

The latter. My Acura also is off by the typicla Honda percentage. Look at it as a feature (as someone mentioned earlier in this thread) not a problem!

Okay. I've seen a similar device in the past. You have to know what percentage your speedo is off and then set the unit to compensate. Or at least, that's how it was on the one I saw.

Unbelievable!

My wife saw something on the news which was inffering that someone researched the acuracy of several japanese makes of cars & found that they seem to be building in speedo error in order to increase their mpg specs!!!! If I remeber correctly, a group of people are trying to get a class action suit going on or some such a thing? Anyway, i wasn't surprised to hear that!!

However, I have a question I hope will get some real feedback: does this alleged speedo error apply to the ST1100s too?

Thanks in advance!!

Tom

Keeps me busy doing someting with my brain when riding long miles on the slab. 7% of 88 is about 6 from 88 is 82. Then I ty it to one more sig fig.

Also saw somethin new on the interstate in Montana last week - a sign that said spedo check - 75 mph = 48 seconds fo 1 mile. No other state recommends checking your speedometer at 75 mph. I gota go back to Montana again this summer with my faST ride. last week I had my burb with the camper trailer so couldn't even check the 75 in 48 seconds. You can easily check the accuracy of your speedo at 60 mph but who wants to go that slow for a whole mile on an ST?

If I remember correctly, from the previous articles regarding the Speedo error, while the speedo was off by approx. 7%, the odometer was in fact on, or close to being on. Meaning it wouldn't be affecting the milage.
However, if a Speedo Healer was installed to fix the Speedometer error, then the Odometer was off by something like 2 - 5%.
Most people seemed to think it was better to have an accurate Speedometer than an accurate Odometer.
I believe there was also a posting by a Wisconsin State Trooper who owned an ST1300 and who had called Honda to complain regarding the Speedo error. He was told by Honda that the 7% was within their specs. He posted, and told Honada, that state requirement in his state was that a Speedo be accurate within 4%. He was going to check it out and get back with more info, but I never saw anything more.

It also cuts warranty costs by about 10%, too. Evidently there's a class action suit somewhere over that.

As for correction, Rally drivers used to have little correction gearboxes they could order for where the speedo cable entered the tranny.

I installed a bicycle speedometer on my 1300... Sigma Sport.. around
20 bucks.. Heck of a lot cheaper and more accurate than a yellow box/speedohealer.. My bicycle speedometer is better than 1% on both
speed and odometer readings....Plus, you get a reading (resettable) of
Max speed, another trip odometer, elapsed time, another clock, total
ride time, and average speed.. 100 bucks to correct your speedometer and
throw your odometer off, or 20 bucks or so for one that reads right...

Putt....

Compared to the GPS (which I consider HIGHLY accurate - 1/second update) both the speedo and the odo are off. In my case, it's about 7%

The speedo must be able to be calibrated as I have a police spec version that is calibrated through the whole speed range. It also has 2kph graduations. So if you can get one of them it should just replace the old one
