Yeah, okay, cousins. But the overuse of plastic is the only thing they have in common in my opinion. With that criteria the Ducati Paso or the Vincent Black Knight might be better, or at least earlier, ancestors.

In my book it the ST's grandpappy is the Pacific Coast.

If you don't look at one and see the direct genetic connection, then you're not paying attention. :) Not only is the styling the same, but their design mission - low maintenance, long distance tourer or commuter -- is too.

IMO the styling prototype for the ST1100 was the PC800.

I've always liked the design of the wraparound trunk the 800 had, as it had the potential to maximise usable space. Admittedly, mounting a top box would have been a challenge, but it could have opened from the side vs. the integrated whole lid.

I am thinking that the V-65 / V45 series dressed were cousins / prototypes of the ST line. At least for me.

Meh.

The BMW R1000RS, R1000RT, and K1000LT set the stage for Honda’s ST1100. Fast, agile, and protective of rider and luggage for long distances the 2 and 4 cylinder RS and RT models developed the 1970’s sport tourer concept to 1990’s maturity. The ST1100 was Honda’s response to the 1990’s growing sport tourer market led by the Germans. By the late 80’s Sochiro Honda believed the V4 was the perfect motorcycle power plant and accordingly Honda spent many yen on its refinement in the VF and ST platforms.

I had a CBR and although I rode it long distance, ~800 miles straight once, it was definitely more cramped. But I was in my 20's so who cares? Also, I think I remember the Ninja 600 being lighter and the FZR being faster at the start. But the CBR would beat them, and the Suzuki, over all. Brings back memories.

I think I’d nominate the CX500 as the grandfather of the ST1100. It was unusual in it’s day for having a liquid cooled engine, and a “V” configuration, perpendicular to the travel of the drive chain, which removed a lot of vibration. Add in the tighter tolerances of a liquid cooled engine, and it became a pretty smooth bike for that time.
