I'm the proud new owner of a '99 ST.

What's the best way to mount highway pegs - also best source for the pegs?

Appreciate any help...

Re: Highway Pegs

yeah -- MCL's pegs, well I call them BLADES, are great!!

it's a simple install, they bolt on the front tip over wing, with a replacement cover that has a cut out for the blade to fold in and out

I really like mine, they fold out of the way for short rides, and are easily opened out for long cruising to stretch out your legs. You can either bend forward at the waist and use your hand to push em out, or you can catch them with your boot to open them out.

There are other brands out there also. Some are more like regular foot pegs, but MCL's really blend in nice with the tip over wing when ot in use. When in use, the "serrated" edge catches and holds your boot sole nicely.

Contact Larry Griffith, he has them or will make them for you
his e-mail address is lgriffith8@verizon.net
or call 760-961-7893... He has made many sets for several
people on the ST site I got mine from him and they are
great and the price is right

A couple of questions regarding MCL's peg extenders:

- Why is it that you don't have to readjust the brake and shifter positions? Doesn't lowering the peg change that geometry?

- For those who have them, how much does lowering the pegs affect ground clearance in turns?

Thanks,
Keith

I have never had them but I think this is a reason many people take them off.

However with that, I used to drag the pegs in the stock position all the time. Then I started leaning into the corners more. Now I don't drag at all. By doing that you could lessen the impact of having lower pegs.

It causes the bike to corner in a more upright position by lowering the center of gravity.

The big reason to do this is lets say you are in a corner, not leaning your body and scraping a peg. All of a sudden you need to increase the lean angle because there is an obstruction in the road or some debris. Well you don't have much room to lean more as you are already dragging. If you (your body) are leaned into the corner and the bike is cornering more upright you have more lean you can apply

This is also why you see the racers hanging off the side of the bike dragging a knee. Now you don't have to lean that far but by simply shifting your position on the seat a little or making the effort to lean your shoulder in more to the inside of the turn you will see how the bike will straighten up and then you can take the corners faster.

That makes perfect sense. As you lean, your weight is going less through the center of the bike. I guess the centre of gravity shifts inward and that unloads the bike, etc.

Excellent tip. Probably common knowledge to others, but definitely new to to me. Thanks much!

The other option is STeed STicks.

I have them on my 1100 and are basically cruiser pegs. For the 1300 I went MCL Highway wings. I liked the position of the STeed STicks better than the wings on the 1100. On the 1300 he came out with a Gen II wing. I don't know if he came out with them for the 1100. The problem with the STicks is that they hang below the wings. In a corner the regular foot pegs are still the first to touch, the next though will be a hard contact of the STeed STicks. This was my motivation to changing my riding style. Since doing that I have yet to drag the pegs again and I am taking the corners faster and have more options if there is trouble.

Agree with the STeed STicks- they're sold by Robert Keinlen, and he usually has a set available on eBay for ~ $240 or so. This is a great mod, and worth the cost.

I know this thread is about pegs, but counter steering should also be discussed with lean angle and weight shifting. I will wager that most novice riders and a large number of riders with road time do not understand this. Many riders think that motorcycles are guided by leaning. I think it was Keith Code who actually built a bike with a non-movable, rigid fork to demonstrate the fallacy of this.

Do you have any photos of Larry Griffith Hwy Pegs? I tried to send him an email today, but it bounced back.

Does anyone know if larry is still making highway pegs or not? I am looking for options out side of the highway blades that a lot of people are using
