Hi,

I'm renewing the ignition coils on my '94 ST1100 which occasionally runs on three cylinders. I picked up a set of aftermarket coils, which are around one third of the price of Honda coils.

The problem is that the coils are too wide. On the widest part across the bodu, the Honda coils are 45 mm. The new coils are 52 mm and will not fit into the ignition coil stay.

Has anyone else seen this problem? It's really frustrating, as you can't trust that the stuff you buy will fit. The coil is supposed to fit into like 160 different bikes, including Hondas.

Did you check battery voltage to the coils?? There is also the large fuse left side front that has corrosion and makes running problems. Another item is carburetor issues. I work on alot of machines and have a 93 ST and use aftermarket parts. One of my sayings is it fits but it don't.. Modify to fit.. There is some other threads on here that will help with running issues..

I've never worked on or seen the coils. Maybe make another metal or plastic piece to screw on the stay, replacing part# 2, to hold the new size coil? It looks like the stay parts are no longer available in the US, I don't know about there. Don't break it! :)

Maybe use tie wraps or zip ties (I don't know what they are called there) to hold the coils in place to be sure that is the problem?

Returned the coils to the shop and got a set of other after-market coils elsewhere which I measured before buying. The new ones fit without a problem, exactly like the originals.

These two sets look identical to the naked eye, but there is a small size difference! So be aware.

The old bike seems to run fine now, after first start-up. It might also have been a problem with the spark plug leads, they were apparently original and more or less rock-solid.

Thanks for your comments!
