ST1100 Tip Over Bars ???

I am wondering ... yea I know I have a 20 year old ST but I love it and want to know
is there any one out there who knows if there is or has been anyone who now makes or in the past has made rear tip over bars for the ST1100.
I have seen photos of police bikes with them so somebody had done it at one time
so am I on my own and have to fab up my own.
Let me know if you have info.

I know that Cool Springs Honda in Franklin, TN has been setting up ST's for police use for years.

They're not the friendliest folks around but they are knowledgeable about ST's.

If there's a source for Tip-over bars for the 1100's they may be able to help you.

I've tipped over an ST1100 or two over the years. Never put a mark on anything other than the forward tip-wing cover. The bags don't touch. What would you gain by adding other bars?

In a crash they could make a big difference in what gets damages and how much. DAMHIk
 
If you haven't marked the bags on an ST1100 you are very fortunate. Usually a serious tipover (or more appropriately a fall over) breaks the mirror, the mirror cover, cracks the tipover wing, and scratches or cracks the bag lid - about $600. Funny how I would know that more than once. ;-) The only tipover bars I have ever seen are of the police variety and they are a bit ugly, IMHO. Something like the Bygdawgs for ST1300s would be nice but you would probably have to remove them every time you needed to take off the side panel bodywork. If you come up with something that doesn't require removal when 'unclothing' the ST, I'd sure be interested in taking a look.
 
From the ones I saw it can be done if you are willing to give up the passenger footpegs. If you are willing to do that, getting some fabbed up shouldn't be too hard. Tipover protection is one thing, crash bars are another. Unless they encircle the machine there are just too many ways a bike can flop around in a crash for them to be very effective. And if they are strong enough to protect the plastic they are just another hard point mounted to the frame to stress or bend it during a crash.

I know some people hate them but I like the steed sticks mounted below the tip-over wings. I have never drug a peg so I don't see me dragging them anytime soon, but they do give you an extra inch or so of clearance in a tip-over.

Yea.......just what you need.....can see where that scoot rocked up on the crash bar and got the trunk face.....that won't happen without those.....trust me......layed mine down at 50mph 3yrs.ago. Of course it flopped to other side and ground on it too, but only got the side- cases in one lower spot on both sides......it slid 325ft on pavement....as I arrarently was airborn 132ft.........very fortunate, avoiding the T-bone, dislocated shoulder, 5stitches in head........yea, Iknow, and was "just runnin down to store 3mi. away......no gear or helmet.......sleeves rolled up........eeeeeekkk.......after 40+yrs. ridin street and motocross, it's ATGATT now.......guardian angel may not be able to keep up next time......

When I got hit by a drunk driver the bike did very well considering everything but the right
bag lid got ground into the blacktop all is as new again ( see my photos) but the type of bars on my
Goldwing would have saved it.

to get all the plastic and have it all painted now it is like new and I want to
keep it that way.

WOW I got most of that damage to my body and I was dead stopped at a stop sigh waiting for traffic
when a drunk nailed me from the left... came out of nowhere. I don't know where he came from

The pic I attached came from ebay. It was a CA. police bike. I really like this type. I would love to have em. Just wanted to give ya another option.

I've been searching for crash bars for my ST1100P for over a year, including calling one supplier in Oxnard, CA. They were not interested in the 1100 (they do manufacture bars for the 1300P) and had not even kept the jig equipment.....probably because of the time lag!. A couple of weeks ago
I contacted a small company in downtown LA and they manufacture stunt cages for street bikes....the ones seen doing wheelies on the freeway!

Took the bike down to them, left it with them for four days to take measurements and do the mock up, and hopefully early next week the bars will be back from the powder-coaters and will be ready to be installed. They have cut a small area in the plastic tip-over covers and the bars will attach directly to the tip-over bars on the bottom and will bolt to the frame at the front. They had considered welding the front portion to the frame but we decided to go with the bolts for ease of installation. They have also welded a small plate to the right-side bar to mount the siren, which I will remove from the right tip-over cover and move further forward.

Once it is done I will post a few pictures............not sure if anyone else might have an interest in a set? The pictures attached show a colleagues bike and I used her set as an example of what I was looking for. Mine should be fairly similar, also in black powder-coat.

Those are really nice. I'd like a set for the next time my ST falls asleep but the way they mount means I'd have to remove my highway wings. That's a deal breaker :(

Looks very interesting indeed (for my '94 'theme bike' in its 'federal regalia'), but I do like to express a warning to observe the ground clearance/leaning angle when designing the bars.

I would definitely be interested in a set of those bars for my ST1100. Post the info on price and availability as soon as you can. Thanks for all of your efforts to develop these bars for our ST's.
