ST1300 Alternator repair parts

Billy

My 1300 died on the M3, England motorway, on the outside lane on my way home from Spain on 21st Oct, thank goodness I was in England and they put it and me in a van and took me home. The problem was that the battery was smoking!!! It turned out, as expected, to be the alternator. I read Trosty's saga and other threads to give me a steer especially when I discovered Honda wanted ?1200 for a new one. I have resolved it myself by getting the replacement bits from the States and doing the work. It was either that or scrap the bike as the combined cost of parts and labour were financially not viable.

Here is the ebay link to get the bits http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/250350452...sid=p3984.m1439.l2649&clk_rvr_id=289911381507. Arrived without further charge before the dates given AND refunded $18 because they over estimated postage charges.

Now fitted and working, I didn't need the bearings but wanted to replace the rest rather than risk having to do this all over again.

I could only buy the rectifier on ebay in the UK. A guy said on Trosty's thread that the bits are bog standard if you know what they are. HE IS ABSOLUTELY CORRECT.

I am doing other jobs to bring bike back up to scratch whilst I have it apart.

It would be nice to have that cross reference ...

I saw the link this am, and it was for a part that fit a lot of Kubota tractors.

Hopefully we can get the cross reference again.

My bike is 2002 but my understanding is that this alternator is used on all ST1300's.

Yes, but the rectifier and regulator are over $300 , they maybe much cheaper from Kubota.

just for the sake of saving this info :

A Repair kit for Nippondenso alternator 100211-4650

Kit contains Bearings, Brush Holder assembly, Regulator and Rectifier.

I wonder if this is the same alternator ?

Applications:

A kit for this alternator would not fit the ST1300. Apart from anything else the rectifier output bolt is in a different place. It has to be exact for the 1300 alternator innards. The outer case is, of course, unique to the bike and does not use a drive BELT.

Even though it was the correct rectifier I still had to shave off a bit of some of the plastics to get it to seat properly as the moulding was not completely accurate. It was no great deal and is not uncommon when the part is not OEM.

As I said these parts have been replaced and the bike alternator is now up and running. One other indication that something was up, apart from the eventually smoking battery, was a slight flicking in the lights. I didn't notice this until about a week before the Pan died. It was only when I was out at night and stopped to check out a house number and switched of the main beam but left the side light on (it is a 2002 bike, remember those days?). I could see a slight flicker in the neutral light but wasn't overly concerned and planned to check it out when I returned from Spain where I was due to go to the following day.

The lights are all now as solid as a rock. I even checked them at night to be absolutely sure. The new battery is as cool as a cucumber!!:) Frying the old battery had a negative effect on it.;) I did try the new battery first but as it quickly got a touch hot I faced the reality that it was the alternator.:( had a little weep and got on with it.
