ST1300 load capacity

----------------------------------------------------------------------

read that the load capacity of the ST1300 is less than 400Lb, something like 375Lb. The FJR was rated at 410.
If you ride 2up, those figures are easily surpassed.
In my case, my 2up touring load is 400 Lb+gear+ luggage, equivalent to a total of 440Lb+
What can be done, other than buying a BMW, to increase the load capacity on these bikes??

I thikn that load cap is without gas and oil .
I'm closer to 300 then I would like to admit and my friend whose bike broke down is well into the 250 range and I had to make him ride biotch for about 50 to get his truck .Seemed to be ok .
didnt bottom out the shocks just sitting there though it did take a little longer to stop.
I never looked up load cap on a bike before this one as ( unknowing or just plain stupid ) I always thought the load cap was more for stopping than the weight was going to break the frame ,I most likely am wrong but those that should know will chime in soon .
riding two up with most the woman I know and we are over the 400 mark with my big butt on the bike .Sorry to say but at 45 I dont know many women that ride with me in the 105 range anymore with leather and helmet on.
In fact I dont know many women over 30 that can honestly say 105 anymore and that is just a fact of getting older as all our broad minds and narrow waists will change places somewhat.

I want to know where they came up with those #'s. I would guess most of us that ride 2-up are exceeding that by 50-100 lbs I know we do me 250 fully geared up wife 150 geared up , top box loaded and side bags loaded for trip most likely closer to 500 lbs. Strangely enough the bike really feels good loaded and handles well and gas milage goes up 2-3 mpg. These bikes really like to be ran hard !!!!

The max load is defined as your combined weight + pillion + gear + luggage and is based on both the bike Wet weight and the Gross weight of the vehicle.

I am 6-2 240# and wife is almost 5-9, our combine 2up weight is about 400#. There will be no room for gear and luggage to comply with the manufacturer (Honda) requirements.

Can someone confirm the Gross weight and the Wet weight of the ST1300 ??

Thanks

I tried to find some more information on it but came up dry. Anyone know if there are any other angle shots availible for it? Thanks.

The Goldwing and the VFR each say about 400 pounds too. I am afraid I have to ignore that one myself. We would fully load up to about 450 pounds heading out for a long trip.

Thanks for the replies. Regarding the Gross Weight Rating, there is more than the tires, although thse are a very important component.
The Gross Weight Rating is so important that it is part of the VIN plate. If you subtract the Wet weight you will get the load capacity of the bike.

I would be curious to hear from some of our European members on this.

Although weight obviously affects handling, braking, tire wear, etc, and none of us want to truly overload the bike's ability, I suspect that the weight may have something to do with attorneys.

Page 44 of the '03 owners manual states that the load limit is 401 lbs in the US, and 410 lbs in Canada. The '06 service manual lists the load limit at 401 lbs. It is what it is. :shrug2:
