Steering head bearings adjustment

Hi, whats the easiest way for me to tighten the bearing adjustment nut down? Do I first need to loosen stem nut and forks? Remember doing this on my old Connie using a flat head screw driver and a hammer. Thanks

On the ST1100 I *believe* you will have to remove the top triple clamp to make the adjustment. Factory spec is 20lb./ft with the ball bearing (original) type. MUCH less with tapered bearings (if they have been replaced).

You may consider replacing the ball bearing type with tapered roller bearings. I did this and it made a big difference with the head shake I was experiencing. The original races were noticeably pitted.

yes

Move tank back out of the way. Removal handle bars including the little plastic cover. Remove big 30mm nut that holds on the top triple tree plate. Remove the four bolts that hold on the top triple tree. pull that top plate off the forks . Bend back the retainer tabs in the slutted jam nut. Use castle wrench to remove jam nut. losen steering head bearing torq nut with castle wrench. Grease as needed. retorq steering head torq nut to spec. install lock tabs. tighten down jam nut rebend lock tabs in place. continue with reassemble.

forks and wheel do not need to come off for a retorq.

I'm not sure of the offical way to do it but that is what i have always done
