My Symax is now 4 years old or so, and needs to be replaced. I've been reasonably happy with it. The hinges have broken, and AFAIK, are not available to replace. Reading reports on various flip-type helmets, the Symax seems to get a reasoanble review, especially for the price. Best price seems to be about $200. Anyone seen them cheaper?

I see HJC now has a less expensive flip-type, called the CL-Max. Anyone have any experiences with that model? There doesn't seem to be much of any way to compare them on HJC's web site. There aren't any local dealers where I can play with one.

I have a 2 year old Symax, I bought a Nolan N-100e at the beginning of the summer and it is a much better lid. Same price range, much more comfortable, better air flow and a little quieter. Only Downside to me is that it's unlatch mechanisim is not as easy to use one handed.

Some comment that they do not like the racheting strap instead of a D ring but I like it.

Al has a CL-max and he wears it sometimes but prefers a Fulmer Modus to it. I can't see too much difference from my Sy-Max. I know the shell is supposed to be different and I think the Sy-max liner is cool max and the CL is not but I could be wrong there.

It's all about the fit to the shape of your gourd. The Fulmer works best for me, and it has the added benefit of being low cost.

new enough .com

Hey guys dont forget that newenough.com donates a dollar to the site for every purchase. I have bought a bunch of stuff from their and they are good folks. They have both models of the hjc flip helmets and pricing is not bad.
To get the pricing on some of the stuf they sell you have to request it by e-mail you will recieve it quickly from the site. Here is a link to the hjc section.

I am no expert on helmets but I did research the SyMax and CL-Max and the problm I had with the CL-Max was the shell is polycarbonate versus fiberglass. This is info I received from Cycle Gear. I know some folks feel the poly shells are fine but I could not get past that and went with the SyMax.

Good Luck

I have both helmets... besides what they are made of, the liner is different, and the Symax has extra venting to. The Symax felt better on my noggin. ;)

Is there a known benefit of either the Thermoplastic (CL-Max) or Fiberglass (Sy-Max) construction? Any knowledgeable discussion of the merits I can read elsewhere? It would seem the Fiberglass would have more "give" to it, which translates into energy absorption, albeit as the shell is destroyed. No problem there.

The Sy-Max has a good old styrofoam liner. I assume that's what most helmets have?

I was able to get the new HJC Symax today. Its black/L. Looks great. Let see how it performs!
