I have had issues with a reattached Achilles tendon but some previously illegal medications , and only to sleep, allowed me to complete a 5,600 mile journey with 3 great riders last summer. I developed some right wrist pain and thought it was carpal. Nope, bone on bone Osteoarthritis. The pain increases all the time. I'm having a wrist fusion on Monday. The doctor rode in his younger days and will fuse it at a slightly greater angle to, hopefully, assist with throttle twisting. Anyone have experience with this and my future with riding? No matter what, you ain't rid of me yet. Bob Donaldson and I talked a few times that our last ride to events would not be a trike but a Miata or similar vehicle. See you soon.

Hope you have a good outcome. Them top down sport cars are good but not as good as 2 wheels. We need all of our senior riders;)

Yes that was a good trip and a bad trip that ended up with many stories. It ended just fine. One of us had a little needed repairs due to a U-joint failure. Caught in time, but he had to make up for the 3 of us ahead of him. He put on some serious miles to catch up. I did not hear him complain, though. Then there is this man. We knew he was having pain in his wrist, but he never complained. Greg is one tough rider. I sure hope the fusion goes well as I can not imagine not making plans for more 2 wheel adventures. We will see him at future events, that is just who he is.

@Mondo there are throttle conversion kits that will convert a thumb to a twist type throttle, I believe there are also some that go the other directions... do you think using a thumb only type throttle would be a solution?

Mondo - I was faced with the same issue and my doctor did a STT resection (in 2003) on each wrist which fixed the problem without fusion (no cartilage in either wrist).
I later had to do a CMC Arthroplasty (in 2018) to fix another wrist issue on both wrists but they still work like OEM.

Don't know if your condition is the same as mine or not but I didn't like the idea of fusion.
Hope it goes well for you whatever the procedure is.

Not sure if one of these (Throttle rocker / Crampbuster) would help even with the fusion.

It would allow you to push down more on the end as a lever with your arm's weight vs having to twist the throttle as much.

That's that I do when I need to rest my cramped or numb hand on longer rides.

I went to 3 specialists and am currently using one from Rush Hospital, rated in the top 5 orthopedic hospitals in the US. I waited too long - I'm a guy and thought it was carpal which is not a big deal to fix. Unfortunately, the bone is worn to such an extent that the repair type fixes are no longer an option. A partial fix/fusion will not relieve all the pain, and it's time to get some relief.

Thanks, Joe. I'll look into that.

I have cruise and a cramp buster paddle type doo hickey on the bike. They certainly help and I hope will allow me to continue riding.

Greg, I hope it goes well and you are back on the bike soon. Sure I hope I can catch up with you again somewhere down the road.

You could just fabricate something like this to see if it would even work... I have a feeling that may just end up causing thumb issues but maybe between the two it gives options.
edit: pretty much same as the crampbuster

I installed a spring counter to the throttle return spring. Made for very light action. In turn, less friction needs to be applied by the throttlemeister.
I’ll recommend a counter spring and cruise control.

Ouch! It's tough to make chicken soup out of chicken poop for sure.
I would definitely look at an electronic cruise control and a throttle rocker.
MCCruise is expensive but has all the bits and pieces for the install and works like a factory one.
Years ago I found some grips that were fat in the middle and had a built in tab on the throttle grip.
They mimicked the 'reverse' of the hand and are super comfortable.
Unfortunately they quit making them.
