EDIT:

Was able to determine that there's current (approx. 10v without the engine running) making it to the spoiler, so it seems the problem is with the spoiler light itself.

I've just installed the ST1300 Spoiler Auxillary Wiring Harness (STA-13SP-WH) from Sporttouringusa.com. This is a special harness that allows the spoiler light to be a running light and brake light.

I have it spliced into the wires going to the tail lights per the directions, which are:

Black - ground wire on ST (green with silver tracer)
Blue - brake light on ST (green wire with yellow tracer)
Green - running light on ST (black wire with silver tracer)

All three of these existing wires go into the tail light assembly.

Problem is, it's not working. Getting no light at all on the spoiler.

The only variance from the directions is that they say the running light wire on the ST is brown with a blue tracer. I couldn't find any such wire going to the light bulbs. According to the wiring diagram in the shop manual, that wire is listed as Bl/Br, which stands for black/brown.

Anybody else hook one of these harnesses up or have thoughts on what's wrong?

Mark,

First off, test the spoiler light by itself by running +12V and ground to the two connectors coming directly from the spoiler. Solid green is ground and I believe the other wire is green/yellow. This will tell you if the light is indeed bad. I have a hard time believing that Honda wouldn't test these things before they ship them out. I would be much more inclined to think that the harness that you bought is miswired (i.e. diodes placed backwards...IMHO).

I went to the website at Sporttouringusa.com but did not see any documentation on the wiring harness. Could you post the instructions that they give you? Did they include a schematic of the harness?

I'm kind of confused on how you listed the wire colors...is the first color listed from the Sporttouring harness and the one in parenthesis the Honda color? That's what I'm assuming.

When you list the ground wire as being green with silver tracer I'm thinking that you grabbed the wrong wire. Most grounds on the ST are solid green wires. You also listed the running light as having a black wire with silver tracer. On mine (2004 ABS) it is Black/brown just like this picture: photo [Note: the picture is from crazykz so there are extra connectors shown :D ]

FYI... I have my spoiler setup to act as a running light/brake light also. I made the harness up myself and ended up using a 470 ohm resistor (I'll have to double check this value... going by memory) in the circuit because I thought that the difference between the amount of light put out when it's operating as a running light versus when it's operating like a brake light wasn't great enough.

If you get really stuck let me know and I could make you up a wiring harness similar to what I did.

Good luck!

ScooterB,

Thanks for the reply. I'm out of town at the moment, but when I get back later this week I'm going to test the spoiler as you suggested. It's going back in any case, because it came with a couple of scratches on it. But, I'll still need to have the wiring correct for the replacement.

I'll take some pics of how I have it wired and post them. Wouldn't be the first time I knew just enough to be dangerous but not enough to be correct in doing electrical work on the bike :

Mark,

Something else to check is the Sportouring harness where it plugs into the spoiler. I put one of there harness kits in a friends ST and could not get it to work. I found that they did a bad job on the crimps. They just crimped them on to the wire, but not to the copper part of the wire. Just the ouside:eek: I cut them off and put new crimps on and it worked fine.

I made mine also from the info on the cal sci site. Picked up the parts at Radio Shack.
