Morning all,

Looking for some guidance.

Went away for 2 1/2 weeks with car and tin tent. Came back and bike started on the button. No problem. Left it running for a couple of minutes, and checked the tyre pressures. All ok, so switched it off, ready for back to work following day.

Following day. Couldn't get it started. Cant turn HISS off to allow it to start. Thought it was remote fob battery. So took car to work, and tried later that evening. Pressed remote and alarm switched on, and again it switched off. did this a couple of times. That part was all fine. Bike still wont start.

Put key ignition, and that comes on. I would normally press the remote and the 3rd red light comes on to allow me to start the bike. This isn't happening. Even though I have changed the batteries on the remotes for new, the alarm wont even activate now. Might the ecu have forgotten the codes?

Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated.

Richard

My first thought - HISS isn't controlled by remote, on any age 13's - at least, not that I'm aware of. Even if you got the factory AVERTO alarm, I don't recall them being linked to HISS

It's controlled by the ignition key.

Flip the kill switch a couple of times? Does the fuel relay click, and the bike whir? EDIT: Also, by any chance is it in gear on the side stand?

Confused now.

So, firstly, I rarely ever use the alarm.

Secondly, to start the bike I have to:

Insert key in ignition, turn key.
Ignition lights come on (ABS, Oil, & Neutral), and the bike beeps, once every second (ish).
Small sounds can be heard, as if relays activating etc. Roughly under tank, and to the rear behind battery.
I then have to press a button on the remote, for the FI light to come on, and I am able to start the engine.
Is tis not the normal procedure you have to follow?

Richard

PS I also seem to remember, but cannot find, instructions on re-syncing keys/remotes by turning the ignition on and off a number of times for varying length of seconds. Anyone know where I can find this?

Nope - not remotely (pardon the pun).

My '02 (like many) doesn't have a remote, I simply insert the key, turn it to RUN position (or ON, or whatever it's labelled) and that's sufficient to disable HISS, with the relay clicking and the FI/ABS /Neutral lights come on. I then hit the starter and ride away. The Neutral goes off when in gear (of course) and the ABS light goes off after exceeding 4mph.

My bike does not beep, and since mine is older, I still have a switch that means I have to manually turn on side lights & dashboard lights. Later models (including the '08) removed the light switch on the right bar.

Now, to your problem - we don't know which alarm you have fitted (most didn't come with them as standard), though in your picture, you have a white bike with a rear seat cowl - is yours the P model (ex police)? Not that I'm aware of any P's having alarms, but depending on geography, it might have been a sensible option for them.

Lets assume it's the factory Averto, a few years back a member here documented how to fit one of those to the 1300... some of the details might match your bike: https://www.st-owners.com/forums/threads/honda-averto-factory-alarm-install.100054/ and there's a thread about removing the same alarm from GoldWings here: https://www.gwocgb.co.uk/index.php?option=com_kunena&view=topic&catid=3&id=645&Itemid=314

The same poster here did start a thread about re-programming the FOBs too, though no-one replied to their post - possibly this suggests the popularity of those alarms? The thread is here: https://www.st-owners.com/forums/threads/programming-of-honda-averto-alarm-transmitters.154916/

There's also an old user manual page here, that shows what the fobs on the Averto look like (styled after alien heads, I believe): https://usermanual.wiki/m/e900d65edc9e2558e385a32d1db33570d11d9cf261126e9e2fd4bb73b59cf3ff.pdf

Assuming that's the alarm you have, I believe your problem has nothing to do with the ECU. It will be the alarm that has forgotten the codes on the fob's, and needs re-training. As I recall, the Averto is a Spyball 65XX clone, so double check the fuse first, check it isn't in sleep mode, and then re-train the fobs (you'll need the user manual for the re-training, as you need the code printed in it).

In case it is a Spyball clone in sleep mode (which disables the fob receiver to save power), the wake-up procedure is:
- press and hold button 1.
- insert ignition key, turn to on
- alarm LED flashes to confirm it's woken up, and now will obey fob button presses.

HISS and any alarm system that you might install are compeltely independent of each other.

Except - if your alarm system disables the ignition, it will break into the ignition circuitry. When I bought my recent 1300, I paid about £300 to have a top of the range alarm system installed. It was a pain in the neck. My normal firing the bike up procedure now had extra steps which required me to use another fob to disable the alarm and then if I didn't start the bike within about 10 seconds it reset itself. Given that I am pratting around with gloved hands this was unacceptable.

So you need some essential equipment. Wire cutters. Insulation tape. A large poly bag. A large bucket full of water. A thick towel. A large brick. A garage. Ear plugs.
Find where the alarm intercepts the ignition circuits. It miight also be tapped into the indicator lights - but that is probably done by plugging into the quartet harness.
Make a plan of what you are going to do and when. As soon as you disconnetct the alarm form the battery it will set it off. Put it in the poly bag, wrap it with the towel, Chuck it in the bucket of water, but the bucket of water in the back of your garage for 24 hours.
Then set about repairing the wiring that the installer has had to break into. Its easy to spot where they have been. They don't generally make a very good job of it, but use a lot of insulation tape while doing it.

That is the largest amount of money that I have ever wasted on buying a equipment for my ST1300. For some reason my ZUmo XT has popped into my head. Clearly part of my brain is trying to tell me something.

HISS. You cannot re-synch keys by doing primative dances, or by holding buttons down. You have to have a key that works and once HISS is active, you can program new keys or re-program keys that have already been registered with the bike's ECU. If you don't have a key that will disarm the bike's HISS system, then you are stuffed. You have to buy a new ECU. (Although there are organisations that may have found a way round this. That is a different topic.)

Normally the HISS light is flashing if it is operating. When you turn on the ignition, you should hear the fule pump motor whirr into life for a couple of seconds and then stop. The HISS light should go out. If those two things don't happen, then you will not be able to start the engine. You can bump start a bike with HISS, but you need to have enough power from the alternator to enable the HISS light to go out. SInce the Headlights are on all the time on later UK bikes (2004 onwards I think), then it would be prudent to pull out the two headlight fuses. Sidestand up, 2nd gear, Kill switch on, Get some speed up, turn on the ignition, let the clutch out and let the speed turn the engine and generate the power. It will suddenly spring into life, so be ready with the clutch. I've only ever had to do this twice, and on both occasions I was fortunate enough to have packed a nearby hill.

The relays that you can hear may be from the normal start up procedure, or they may be from the alarm system, activating the indicator lights. The beeping is not normal start up - that may be from the alarm. The ST1300 does not have a remote. That will be for the alarm.

Not very helpful I am afraid. But just letting you know that I've been there, done it, got rid of it and wasted my money.

OK Definitely the key. Can someone please point me towards the instructions for programming a key with out the cable etc

Thanks

PS Hadnt updated before replying. Reading the above posts now.

Thanks,

That is the old ST1100P I had previously.

It is an Averto. Found instructions. Hold main button for 1 sec, release then hold again for 15sec. Re-syncs to bike.

John, the me from a few years ago loves this approach (I've also used aluminium foil and a 9v battery before now, and converted an old-ish box truck to a mobile garage & faraday cage).

But the Averto being a factory fit, actually has OEM plugs for the harness, and doesn't require cutting at all. It's actually remarkably easy to install and subsequently remove - if you can remove the tupperware, you already have everything you need to remove the Averto ;)

But of course, it seems that OP here just wanted the damn thing to work again

That's a much better way of doing it. Mine plugged into the 9 pin connector where the quartet harness fits, but being an immobiliser, the Honda dealer had snipped the lead to the run/stop switch effectively adding a new switch in series, controlled by the alarm. Why they even fitted an immobiliser, I don't know. The HISS system already has that well covered. They don't care, the just sell the stuff that gets them most profit. Its the first and only time that I bought brand new from a 'Honda Dealer'. I was not impressed.
