I have been trying to find out what this small hose is on the right side of the engine. It looks difficult to replace, and so I have not bother to change it out in 15 years. I am curious to know what it's function is and how critical it is to the operation of the motorcycle.

I suspect he's talking about the crankcase breather hose that runs a crooked path from the water pump up into the bottom of the airbox. Agreed, a picture would remove all doubt.

Here is a picture of the hose

As per Mr. Dwalby, I think you'll find this is the breather pipe. If not perished and leaking I would leave it alone.

actually, no, that's not the breather hose. I've never paid much attention to that hose, I don't know what it does.

It’s the crankcase breather hose. It’s attached to the bottom right corner of the water pump housing, shown in the image. Leads from there on up around the head into the ‘V’ and plugs into the nipple on the bottom right side of the air cleaner housing..TruST me.

Ah, thanks John, I didn't recognize it was attached to the water pump from the angle of the picture. It looked like a 1-2" elbow going from the block and back into the block. makes sense now, the upper part is the part that winds up through the carbs and into the bottom of the airbox.
