AVON Closing

I had an Avon separate and blow out on the rear of my Goldwing. Never looked at them again. That could be part of the problem. I really liked the tires up until that point!
 
Production in the UK makes no sense. It's too damn expensive. There must be plenty more Goodyear plants that will take up the slack. I used the Avon ST's on the Pan 1100, they're not a bad tyre but not quite up there with Bridgestone. Another 350 folk to burger flip at McDonald's.

I've used several sets of Avons on my 1100. No problems. I had a couple flats, as with other brands, but plugged them and moved on .
 
Years ago there were several ST1300's and St1100's that suffered rear tire failures with Avon tires one causing a pretty severe accident(STOC members name was Raven I believe). Avon did not stand behind their product and after that would not approve the use of their tires on the ST1300's any more. I stayed away from their tires after that.

An accident investigation might not come to the conclusion that the tire was at fault. IIRC that accident was about 1200 miles into the day. No onboard TPMS. The tire pressure was checked the morning of the day before making 1000+ miles on that day. So the tire had 2000 plus miles on it crossing the USA from FL and no one knows if there was a low pressure/high heat condition that caused the tire to delaminate. Tires that fail from overheating often shed the tread virtually intact as the separation occurs in the sidewall and not the face of the tread. Like that tire.

I don't remember Avon stepping away from the ST1300 'after that'. That accident was in 2007 or 2008. A set of Avon tires was on the ST1300 involved in a fatal LEO accident in Britain in 2005. The imfamous Coronor's Report blamed the ST1300's handling at high speed and most if not all UK police jurisdictions got rid of their police ST1300s at the publication of the report. I think the fact is that Avon was an approved fitment for the ST1100 in the UK but was never an approved tire for the ST1300 after the fatal accident. In the USA the only tires Honda ever approved was the Bridgestone BT020F OEM and Dunlop 220L OEM.

I seem to remember Tread separation years ago on Brazilian? made cruiser tires many years ago. There was a recall.
After a few stories like that I never trusted Avon tires and won't miss them

They seem to have a few different manufacturers making their tires.
 
I had an 11”x about 1-1/4” section delaminate forming non pressurized bubble on a ST1100. Adding to that experience, I’d pass on buying a tire from a struggling company.
