Has anyone figured out how to buy a Ram mount that is a perfect fit for a radar detector? I'm considering a Passport 8500 detector and would like to buy a Ram mount that fits this product.

[The only thing I've changed is I went with a slightly larger anunciator (actually, the new one is a Tip Over Alarm for a vending machine, easily heard at 120+.]
My Escort 8500ix fits just right in this case, and haven't had a problem in 20K miles.

Pretty slick. Looks to be reasonably weatherproof, no? How much heartache in removing the Passport...looks like the lid is screwed onto the base.

4 little nylon screws hold the cover to the base plate. Velcro holds the RD to the base plate. Never a drop of moisture in all those miles, including many serious rain storms.

Anyone ever tried one of these? Looks like a pretty inexpensive device that allows you to custom fit it to any device.

I just put my 8500 in the top of my tank bag, I can normally see a cop who is shooting laser before it goes off, since they have to be so close to a bike, so I give up the laser detection but the x,k band works just fine in the top of the tankbag. By doing this I do not have to worry about the radar detector being exposed to the elements, or LEO's. Kieth

I am going to try the hoonhardware radar box. Next question...is the round thing under the box an external speaker? If so, is it waterproof? If so, where'd you get it?

This is what I use with my V1. Metal plate is attached to bottom of RD with super strong adhesive foam tape. Ram Mount Plate is magnetic with just a slight depression for the metal plate. Results in a very solid fit. Have ridden 120,000+ miles on two STs with this and has never come off. Yet you can take it off with ease when needed.
Oh, and for my high tech waterproofing...
Ziploc bag over the top with reuseable wire tie! Never gotten wet.
After making a donation to some county in Colorado in summer 2009, I decided to start bringing my 8500 x50 along on longer rides. Instead of buying the $60 plastic box, I bought a $5 project box from Radio Shack and mounted it to a RAM arm mounted to my left handgrip assembly. The box has an aluminum lid, that I used as the base, and attached a RAM ball to. I drilled some vent holes (being careful to not allow rain water to flow into the box) and used some pieces of foam to hold the detector off the base, allowing air to circulate around the detector.
The box doesn't have any see-thru sections like the $60 box, but that just means that I have to wait a few more seconds to know that I'm about to get a laser ticket.
Lastly, I use the Marc Parnes LED pack attached to the middle of my windscreen and it works GREAT.

just made a donation myself in WY.... my question: does the radar detector help you avoid further invitations to the policeman's ball?
Not sure how to interpret your question. If the question is how effective is the use of a detector, I'd say it's very helpful. It's nice to know where the LEO's are. Most LEO's are lazy (sorry member LEO's) and overuse their radar guns. I do exceed the limits in certain situations, but I'm pretty careful and sometimes I'm quite pokey (like in residential areas).
I'm pretty sure the detector would have helped me in Colorado. There was at least one other deputy working the same stretch of highway. While writing me up, the other guy had someone pulled over on the other side of the highway. While I was getting my gear back on, "my" deputy took off in pursuit of a third vehicle. Definitely a revenue raising operation.
thanks, yes, that does help. I never get tickets, other than on my bike, and am averaging 1 per year but still... be nice to get none.
