Decided that today was probably the last time I could take my DR650 up into the High Country. Winter is just around the corner and the High Peaks have a bit of dusting of snow on them. Was able to get up to about 11,500 ft. before the trail ended. Well above tree line. This time I rode up with a DR buddy of mine. Good thing, as he dropped his bike and struggled to pick it up by himself. The Aspen and leaf trees were in full color today. Beautiful. I am very fortunate to have the Mountains in my motorcycle back yard.

Did you get down to Batopilas and stay at Hotel Mary? Cool place.
We got to Batopilas but stayed at Juanitas. The courtyard looks out over the river

The town was dead. I don't know how much was due to everyone's fear of Mexico, or the road to Creel being closed for paving, or a combination.

The road was under the excavator. We thought we might be able to sneak by but as we were talking with the construction worker closing the road, a 4' boulder came rolling around that curve. =8^0

We decided to ride back. Supposedly, they re-open the road after 5:00 pm but I don't think that reliably happens

I personally don't think the pavement will be ready for ST's anytime soon. Here's a shot of one of the new paved sections

We left via Guachochi which was a much better maintained road than the one to Urique. However, the ride from Urique to Batopilas may have been my favorite day ever on a motorcycle.

I tried to take the "shortcut" from Urique to Batopilas and it was the worst day I ever had on a motorcycle. If you took the shortcut where we had to cross the Urique river (no bridge) my hats off to ya!! The pic is of my riding partners KLR a short distance after the river crossing and steeper than it looks.
George could prolly do it on the DRZ ,if and only if, I were a betting man.

It's time I stuck my toe into the water here:

Most of my machines are dual-sports (a Suzuki invented marketing term BTW). The ST is used to keep me from wearing out all my knobbies.

So....a few photos............IMG_0829.jpg

She's a 89 DR750. Big single cylinder dual-sport.

Not imported to the USA. Purchased through a military import from Italy and actually registered in California after a 2 week scrap with the DMV (9 digit VINS drive them nuts).

Other than really tight single track, it's my the best balanced bike I have. Tweaked front forks and Wilburs shock in the rear.

I've also managed to get my paws on a 92 DR800 (update from the 750).

Doing "strip and re-build" on this one and the plan is to turn is to turn it into a Rally bike Replica kinda like this:

It looks like you need to be about 6'6" to mount a DR750-800!!

They are tall(ish) bikes but no taller than a standard DRZ400. The photo is a bit misleading. The rider is Gaston Rahier...3 time 125 MX World Champ and 2 time Dakar winner on the big BMW. He was only 5 ft 4 in. tall but a great rider.

Using that photo of him next to the Suzuki Rallye bike always makes people take notice.

So now we know where BMW got the beak from
Very perceptive of you....yep, both the "beak" and the term "dual sport" are Suzuki inventions.

Here's a 1990 DR650 with "Dual Sport" on the side panel.
