This is just a heads up- I just bought a SET of Metzeler Z8 Interact tires (the type I have on the 2000 ST now) for $160 shipped (110/80/18 and 170/60/17 sizes) and this includes the sales tax to South Carolina and free shipping.

The only thing I can’t say yet is the date codes on the tires as I just ordered them this AM.

The only reason I found it as I was researching tire prices for scooters (I have my eye on a local SilverWing 600 at the next town over from me)- the Burgman on the For Sale section piqued my interest (I’d love to have the Burgman, but right now it’s too far away).

I expect tire prices, like everything else, will be going up shortly, if they have not already. That said, tires, like some other goods seem to be more of a commodity and can be subject to sales, promotions, and 'deals'. Keep your eyes open and shop around if you are looking.

FWIW, the stock rear on the 1100 is 160/70-17. I know some people have experimented with running the more common size you mentioned, how is that for swingarm clearance??

The front tire for the 2000 St1100 should be a 120/70R-18 not a 110/80. The newer 95-96 + St1100's use a wider from tire. As stated above the rear tire is also not correct but will probably be okay though the diameter is slightly different as well as the width. The 170/60-17 is used on the ST1300.

IIRC, 120/70 is only for the front of ABSII models 96 and later.
All standards and ABSI uses the 110/80s.
The 120/70 is also the same size as the ST1300.
I have ran 170/60 rears on my ABSII ST1100s without any issues just to see.

Interesting…I’ve always run the 110/80/18 on the 2000 and the 120/70/18 on the 94 (the ABS model)- I’ve been running the 170/60 rear on both for a long time as they’re much easier to find than the 160/70.

I happen to have 3 of the 4 'variants' (no ABSI) - pre-96 model standard, post 96 model standard, ABSII model.
The front rim on the standards is marked 3.0, on the ABSIIs it is marked 3.5.
The ABSII also have 43mm front forks instead of the standard 41mm (swapped a standard over to a ABSII front end for the better brakes).
I had a EBay seller send me an ABSI rim after I explained to him the difference and that it had to have 3.5 on the rim. ;)
Running a 120 instead of 110 works on the standard - don't know of anybody that died in a fiery crash because of it.
You can also install an ABSII front rim on a standard (BTDTGTS) if you swap the rotors.
All the bolt patterns and clearances of all three versions of the front rim are the same.
The ABSII rotors happened to be smaller than the standard rotors.

When I got my 1990 1100 it had a 170/60 rear tyre and was a bear to get on the centrestand. With the standard size 160/70 it was much, much easier. There's a significant 10mm of difference in the tyre height, so the bike is starting off that much further off the ground when you engage the centrestand. Ground clearance is also better, and the gearing will be proportionately lower. As Uncle Phil points out however, very unlikely to cause death in a fiery crash.

Those tyre prices make me (and my wallet) weep. I'm looking at over NZ$600 for a set of Road 5s, allowing for exchange rate that is close to US$400. Raw material and shipping prices are still climbing so they are unlikely to get cheaper anytime soon.

My mistake - I thought all St1100's after 96 used the 120/70 front tire regardless if it was an ABSII bike or not.

I do well to remember my name some days without looking at my driver's license! ;)
The ABSII 'setup' changed the triple tree, the front forks, and the caliper mounting system.
Having over 14,000+ miles on rental ST1300s, I can say that the ABSII ST1100 brakes (not the ABS part) are about as good as the ST1300.
And the ABSII also has a fork brace 'buried' under the two piece front fender.

Thanks for the heads up, I purchased a set of tires and a rear case at a BIG discount.
