That's because you fit the "profile" of a GW rider: "mature" physique and you've ridden to the moon and back....LOLI had a guy pull up beside me the other day and ask if my ST1100 was the New Goldwing!
I never thought about it that way -- care to float me a loan for the new Goldwing - payable on February 30th?That's because you fit the "profile" of a GW rider: "mature" physique and you've ridden to the moon and back....LOL
Yep, and just to make sure I compare correctly I stopped by the dealer tonight on the way home and sat on it. It's a small dealer so they only have ONE Gold Wing Tour manual and say they won't get more for a few months. It's still cold here many days so most riders stay off the roads (not me). This dealer says all their demos and used bikes are packed away in their warehouse for another month and a half! Anyway, I am able to easily flat foot on this Wing, better than I remember on my old GL1500. It is a little taller than my CTX but the seat height spec indicates that. It's just enough to notice. Yet not nearly as tall as my ST1100 was.Just curious if you sat on one?
Yesterday, I rode both versions - the traditional clutch/gear verson and the DCT. You get to ride the bike unescorted on ~ 27 mile loop with the majority of the loop at posted speed limit of 65 MPH, and a portion is interstate at 70 MPH. I enjoyed riding both versions, although I must say that I enjoyed the DCT more...it will definitely spoil you! I cycled thru all the modes, and ended up staying in Sport mode on both bikes. Both are butter smooth on the shifting, with the DCT almost imperceptible...the only way I knew it was shifting up or down was by the change of the exhaust note (without looking at the gear indicator on the dash). Nice bike!A Doctor here in Oklahoma City bought that one. He has to heal up from totaling out his 2017 Wing before he can pick it up.
Did you ride one of them Mark? I'm going back when they get there demo bikes in. I didn't want to ride the ones they ones they had on the floor for sale. I'm not ready to buy one yet. I'm leaning towards a new RT. But my soon to be 11 year old ST is still going strong with zero problems.
While not a deal-maker for me I do love a GPI! My V65S had one and I really like it. So did the 650 Nighthawk another favorite of mine.okmurdog said:the gear indicator
Wow, from that angle the mass of the GW engine is really pronounced. Here is a pic of a DCT and My bike side by side, well my bike is a few feet further back. They are both 36" wide and the GL is 101" vs the ST at 99" with the PAn American topbox. I was able to take the GL DCT out for an hour test ride.
But it's a low mass.Wow, from that angle the mass of the GW engine is really pronounced.
If this is what Ma Honda is trying to sell me as a replacement for my sport touring 1300, then she doesn't understand the concept of sport touring anymore. The new 'Wing is a beautiful bike, but it is not an ST1300 replacement.I've been telling friends since the new 1800 was released thats it a 2 for 1. Everyone gets a new up dated Wing and its also a replacement for the ST1300 which has been discontinued.
Nor for my delicately aging ST1100s!If this is what Ma Honda is trying to sell me as a replacement for my sport touring 1300, then she doesn't understand the concept of sport touring anymore. The new 'Wing is a beautiful bike, but it is not an ST1300 replacement.
She's not. Honda knows full well what the new 'Wing is and isn't. But some riders will happily find it as an ST1800 for their use. And who can blame them? Poseurs maybe but certainly not anybody who truly loves riding. If this is what Ma Honda is trying to sell me as a replacement for my sport touring 1300...
Everyone rides what they want to ride. I only take issue if they misrepresent a bike as something it's not. I'd love to have a new 'Wing in my garage, but I wouldn't swap my 14 year old ST for one. She's not. Honda knows full well what the new 'Wing is and isn't. I think the automotive industry tries to reinvent itself periodically to garnish interest and more importantly to them, sales. In the car world for instance why do we need the terms, SUV, Crossover, MPV aren't they all the same thing, bloated lumps of steel to the fashionista; it's only to attract interest for sales. Yes I do own a 4 X 4, and this winter I'm glad I do, but I don't need a fashionable term to convince me to buy it. Honda wants us to believe the GW is a sports tourer, who cares, it isn't, but who cares. It's only relevant to whoever buys one and wants to believe the sales blurb. If you want a large touring motorcycle with low standard luggage provision buy a GW if you fancy one, I'd buy it now whilst Honda refer to it as a sports tourer, the marketing department will soon find another description; "Lifestyle Accessory and Motorised Experience vehicle" anyone.I only take issue if they misrepresent a bike as something it's not.
