:tools1: It was almost a year to the day that I had my thermostat replaced (under Warrantee - I got it back Oct 20th 2006) Saturday I took it again for the same thing. It may not take that long to actually stick open, but here in Florida it dosn't get cold enough to affect it till now. THe first time it was around 17,000 miles and now about to turn over 33,000 so it is about even in that respect

Just curious, does it stick open and run cool or stick closed and run hot? I'm at 15.5K as the third owner of a '03A. I put about 10K on in 10 mo. So, may I should change it over winter, I don't know.

I've got 15,000 miles on my 05' ST1300, and I believe that my thermostat is stuck open!

What is with these thermostats?

I've owned cars that ran almost 200,000 miles with the same thermostat!

Anyway, I've got one on order. Even though it's still under warranty, I'm afraid to take it to one of the STealers! I'll just do it myself.

DANG THERMOSTAT!

FWIW my thermostat began showing first evidence of beginning to stick at 8000 miles or so. It finally stuck open at about 18,000 and I replaced it at 22,000. The second Honda 'stat is working just fine about 15,000 miles later. I have my fingers crossed.

For what it's worth: it's not just the ST's affected by this. I had an 04 VFR (another Honda V-4) that ate 3 thermostats in less than 2 years. All replaced under warranty, but the last one had the dealer scratching their heads and telling me if it happened again they wouldn't know where to go...

So, I traded in the VFR while the stat was working.

I believe this is the first incident of having to replace a thermostat twice. My guess is the dealer replaced the thermostat and coolant without cleaning the overspray from the insides of the radiator inlets, flushing the system and thoroughly cleaning the overflow bottle. All of which would likely cause a second failure.

I'm on my second OEM t-stat, now with 50K+ on the bike, and about 25K on the replacement. So far so good. I have the Turbo City replacement on my work bench should the second t-stat start getting flaky.

When I replaced the original one, I saw no evidence of particles or over spray, but the center shaft looked like it had collected some crusty deposits. I replaced the coolant with the Honda cage pre-mixed stuff. I noticed it was a little different in color than what I drained out. Perhaps this is a superior coolant formulation that better resists deposits than the OEM fill in the ST?

My 'stat failed twice. I have a turbo tom stat installed now and no stat problems yet. I'm taking it in for coolant leaks tomorrow.
