40 amp alternator remove

I have a bike trike st1100 great thing but the 40 alternator has packed up went to remove it un did the three bolts and have made the mistake of pulling the whole lot out about ten mill I now understand that the teeth on the back bit are out of line do I have to strip the whole sump down and such to re line them up or is there a easyer way of doing it ive not yet put the new alternator in as I need to remove the swinging arm to take it out any help would be really help full thanks dave

You can realign the split gears with a "Lewis pin", which holds the spring loaded gears in alignment for insertion into the engine. On the end of the pin, you attach a heavy gauge piece of wire long enough to reach out through the oil drain hole. Once the gears are meshed within the engine, you pull the pin out through the drain.
