Nice trip, UP.
I ran some of the same roads on my trip this past summer, particularly in SD and maybe Montana.
I was as impressed as you with the vistas out west, even on straight roads that seemingly went on forever.

Great read Uncle Phil, sounds like a great trip with the obvious exception.
Well, I reckon it was that - I've decided I don't do pilot trucks anymore - especially in the Yukon! ;)
I would do the ALCAN to Haines Junction and then take the ferry again from Haines as that would be a nice trip.
Probably would stop in Skagway for a night on the way up and then back to the ALCAN and Haines Junction.
You'd get two Alaska state line signs that way and avoid the nasty road construction (and see the prettiest part IMHO).
But the rest of the places with the exception of Homer, I've got no real interest in going back to.
