I have a 93 ST 1100 and would like to have at least a heated vest for off season riding. How many amps of draw will my stock alternator take? Is this a weak sysem?

A heated vest shouldn't be a problem.
From my reading and personal experience is, one runs into trouble by not cleaning electrical connections. Overtime, connections become loose and or corroded, causing poor connections and overheating. The culprits are the voltage regulator/rectifier, the red connector and the three yellow wire. When you take the right cover off you will see them. Take the time to clean and apply dielectric grease to the terminals.
i believe the system can safely handle heated grips, heated vest and run a GPS, without worry.

Excellent table by Mike Martin in post # 3.

Install a voltmeter so you will know.

My Owners Manual shows alternator capacity.

Did some measurements and calculations many years ago, and came to pretty much the same results as Mike Martin: ~10A extra avail (I'd included a battery charging current...)

The Owner's Manual for an ST1100P shows:
- with 2x 55W low beam: 90W avail for equipment
- with 1x 55W low beam; 145W avail for equipment
However did police spec STs came with a rigid VRR, with larger heat-sink.
