Since I'm doing a comprehensive overhaul of the bike systems - newly purchased bike - I was wondering if I should consider removing the alternator for bearing/brushes inspection. My bike has 37K miles on it. What is your experience with alternator longevity relative to miles? I know the alternator has a pretty "disadvantageous" location within the engine and is exposed to a lot of heat. Please share.

At 37,000 miles I certainly wouldn't bother, unless there is an indication of a problem. Barring any unpredictable failure of an internal part, which can happen at any mileage, I wouldn't even consider doing anything to it before 100,000 miles. It is not an item of the ST1300 that suffers from premature wear as a matter of course. Most reported failures that I have read about that were attributable to normal wear, such as brushes or bearings, have occurred on high mileage ST1300's. High being over 100,000 miles, like 150,000 miles.

My first ST1300 had the alternator go out at 50K. That bikes has 190K on it now and still going strong.

My other 4 ST1300s have not had any alternator issues.

Congrats draser. I replaced mine @92k last month. What seems to have damaged mine was a clogged drain channel in the alternator galley. I will periodically check proper draining so this can't happen again. #14 #15 #28 The coolant hoses T fitting near radiator that breaks. The water/coolant drain
hole (so alternator can't drown if there is coolant leak) #20. My particular clog issue #36 (can't believe it myself).

122000 on mine and no problem either. Seems like it has been a problem that needs to be addressed as to what failed and the reason.
Anybody, mechanical or electrical failure?
