Whilst up at Dave's with Cammy getting our carb balances checked, I note that we were all running Avon STorms!

I looked at my mileage and realised that this is the highest mileage I have ever achieved on a front tyre on my ST's.....

Thy tyre has done about 8000 miles and has maybe another 3-500, maybe more, left in it.....

Previous best was the tyre that was on this ST when I got it, a BT020F which after checking servicing records, had done 6390. Which I thought quite good compared to my previous ST1100.

Dave commented that my rear, TYRE, looked very good despite having around 3000 on it already. The previous tyre, also a STorm, which replaced the original BT020 rear at 6390, only did 4900, which was shocking, but did include my End 2 End ride so pretty much squared it off and took out the centre of the tread.

If the rear continues to wear as well as it is I think, it should do almost 8000-9000 miles. Which will pretty much be a record for any bike I have ever run....

So to summarise;

BlueSTeel... ST1100.

BT020's on bike when I got it, mileage 6390 miles front and rear.

Avon STorm non Ultra rear 4900. Squared and worn out in the middle.

Avon STorm Ultra front so far 8000 miles.... only 0.5 millimetres remaining above the wear markers. (Standard balance weights)
Avon STorm Ultra rear so far 3000 miles with 5.0 millimetres remaining,it comes with 6.8mm. This tyre has Dyna Beads installed, has no cupping or uneven wear at all, other than the usual wearing out the middle first.

I am looking forward to trying the next STorm Ultra on the front with Dyna Beads to see if there is an improvement, most particularly in evenness of wear as per the rear.

Hope this is useful, please bear in mind that where I live and the roads I ride are not the kindest on tyres. I wish I could see some of the mileages you guys in the US get on tyres......

Les, I'm in luv with the 'STone BT-020 M bias, speced for a BMW. Don't know if youse guys have the freedom to run a non-spec tar but it's by far the best I've found for the 1100. I regularly get 15,000 out of them. On the front, I've not found the one "best" yet. Currently have an Excedra 130/70/18 (Gold Wing spec) waiting in the wings for my '01 ABS.

I'm off the Avons yet again, following some of the troubles we've seen with them. There's another thread on here concerning the 170/60/17 Storm II rear on 1300s. Speculation sez youse guys get a different batch than we.

Been researching putting a 1500 'Wing wheel on the rear with a car tar (lots of threads concerning that) and have found reference to a London Taxi Tire in size 170/R16. Can't seem to find a good source in the US, what would be the chances of getting a couple shipped from yur side of the pond?

Source here.

At the least, hoping to get an actual measurement as to width and height.

TIA,

George, you run the bias 020 rear and a radial on the front correct?

Yes, sir, never a problem. The old (automotive) saw about not mixing had to do with imbalance at one or more corners. With only an in-line pair of tars, little chance of imbalance unless the tars are SO different. I've had worse problems with mismatch (New Michelin bias on the rear, old Avon bias on the front) than I've had with my current mix.

I'm running the bias Bt020 rearand Storm (not Ultra) front on my 1100. I can tell no difference in the handling than when I ran Storm fronts and rears and a Storm front BT023 rear, except that with the radial rear tires my 1100 had a weave when following 18 wheelers on the interstate. The bias BT020 rear took that away. 2,000 miles of rain riding in the Tennessee, NC, Georgia mountains and nary a slip.

1st Storm front 12K miles and left side worn to wear bars, 2nd Storm 12k miles and I have 1.7mm of tread depth with no cupping and even wear. 1st Storm rear 11k, 2nd Storm rear 8K, BT023 rear 8K. 3K on the BT020 rear and no measurable tread loss.

Just replaced AVON Storm front with a Bridgestone BT023 front. The Storm 45mph headshake is GONE:clap2:
I have read a bunch of the Avon tires doing this and others have said there was something wrong with their bike! I don't see me putting on Avon tires on my bikes anytime soon! Glad your head-shake is gone.
