It failed - and it ain't the first ST1100 fuel pump to fail on me!

IMO water and ethanol contamination... -> rust...

My theory (and it is just a theory- ) - I tend to run the tank down pretty low on fuel on long trips.
Since fuel cools the pump, that may be shortening the life of the pump when done repeatedly due to the heat.

I had forgotten about running on low being hard on the pump, my rides are alot shorter these days so top up at about a quarter tank.
