Brute force the lock in my glove compartment?

I think a piece of metal or something may have dropped into my glove box compartment. Now, I cannot open it. I've tried using a vacuum to suck debris out, etc. Can I just use a flat head screw driver to brute force it open then replace the lock mechanism?
