Getting pretty pï553d off now. Engine wrecked due to cambelt\ waterpump failure. Rebuilt another low miles engine, new cambelt, waterpump tensioner etc. But when im trying to time the camshafts up the cams keep jumping out about half a tooth. This is really getting to me

Sounds like the kind of thing that would benefit from a word by someone who has done it before. Unfortunately, that's not me. I've only worked with chains and never on a ST1100. Good luck.

Go to the top of the page and click on "Articles", select ST1100, scroll down to "Timing belt change, the complete walk-through". You'll have it sorted in no time.

IIRC, mine was off by about a 1/2 tooth. If you're that close, have 51 belt teeth between left/right gears and everything else is correct, you should be OK. These may help...

Here’s a link to my thread on timing marks and belts, the punch marks and lines and my own ineptitude...

The long and short of it is that I was a tooth or so out and no problems. Pulls hard with no expensive, crunchy sounds.

Dazm:

This is a shot in the dark (I've never done a timing belt on a ST 1100), but... have you confirmed that you have the two camshafts in the correct position, meaning, the left one on the left, and the right one on the right?

Are you using a cam belt from Honda or are you using non OEM
Belt manufactures have min/max tolerences that can deviate giving you a less than perfect alignment.
Only half a tooth out is not a big deal in my books.
