CB1100: a beautiful love letter to the old CB750

I was always intrigued by the CB750, the first super bike released in 1969 that caused a revolution that pushed Honda to the leadership, while destroying European motorcycle makers (almost bankrupting HD) and starting the UJM (Universal Japanese Motorcycle) trend of the 70's and 80's.

But owning a CB750 in these days is an expensive and painful endeavor. Leaky carbs, dodgy electronics (mostly due to decades of previous owner's mods) and sky high prices are definitely a problem.

In 2010 to celebrate the 30 years of the CB750, Honda released the CB1100. It was designed to offer the closest experience to the CB750, while incorporating modern tech (i.e. fuel injection, better brakes, better suspension, etc) without forgetting the essence of the original.

The bike was introduced in the American market in 2013, but unfortunately it was never a big seller. It was pricey (around $10K-$11K), offered less raw power than other competitors (e.g. BMW R nine T) and wasn't 'retro enough' for some public.

The CB750 MSRP in 1970 was around $1500 bucks which converts to around $9K in 2013, the year of release of the CB1100 in the USA for around $10K. I honestly think that Honda did it on purpose with the pricing.

While it was a weak seller in the USA market, apparently it sold really well in Europe and Japan. The list of fairing mods and body parts available in Japan is pretty awesome.

Unfortunately, thanks to the Euro 5, these oil heads are no more as it can't match the requirements for emissions. A last 'final edition' model was announced in Japan for late 2021 (https://www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/news-and-views/news/2021/october/new-honda-cb1100-final-editions) and I realized the window to buy one started to close.

I was fortunate enough to find a 2013 Honda CB1100 for sale near my neck of the woods for a killer price. She has 20K miles and a folder with dozens of receipts with all the maintenance performed by the Honda dealership (it is a single owner bike).

It also has installed a Japanese fiberglass front fairing that complement the looks (like a cafe racer) and a Givi trunk (that is functional but ugly as f*ck). It even came with a corbin seat!

I only put 100 miles on it, given that is raining no-stop this week in Cali... but I got share:
a) The engine is crazy smooth. On lower RPMs, it resembles the Valkyrie flat six.
b) Torque? Yes! Lots! It pulls from 5th gear around 25-30 miles per hour.
c) Past 4000RPM its engine wakes up and it shows lots of character.
d) The brakes are really good. Seriously, remembers my ST1300.
e) The sound and feeling of the bike is pure perfection. The engine even 'pings' when it is cooling, like the old CB750.

Overall, really happy with the bike and I'm planning next to perform the mandatory maintenance and getting it ready for spring time.

Congratulations on the new bike.
The 1100 is just peachy, they made a good job of it.
Most over here are garage queens, you see them being sold with very low mileage and the prices are definitely on the way down from the original strong resales. You never saw many and you still don't.
I had the SOHC F2. That was also an old garage queen, and to be honest probably the best place for them.
Enjoy it.

I eyeballed the 1100 more than a few times. My only I-4 UJM (and first bike above 500cc) was a new '98 CB750. $5000 otd, self adjusting valves, comfortable, smooth, reliable, 4 cylinders! Stock pipes were restrictive and it would flat spot at 6k with lots of vibes. It was a different animal with a full titanium Supertrapp (financed by a $750 scratcher) and a jet kit. It screamed to redline (8k), super smooth and wanted even more revs. Sweepers were a joy, the bike understood them and leaned over automatic. Bad news? Brakes were weak, handling in tight canyon corners non existent, suspension. Still, I loved that bike! Good memories.

I had a '78 CB750, last of the SOCH engines with the original 4-into-4.
While I enjoyed it as a throwback to to earlier days (it was made 4 years after I legally began riding), when I bought it in 1999 with only 2500 miles on it (!), it seemed really anemic... but at the time I also owned the CBR1100XX as well as a CBR600. (There ARE some advantages to being single!)
It's unfair to compare the 750 at the time, with the more modern inline fours, but insane quickness and sharp sportbike handling was what I'd become used to. The CB's 20-year-old brakes and suspension were also obviously sub-par, when riding them back to back, but it's also an obviously unfair comparison.
The new 1974 CB750 Four at $1800 or so sticker price (at the time) meant I had to settle for a Suzuki GT550 triple as my first bike, for 20% less, as I was working at Baskin-Robbins for minimum wage in high school.
I'm glad to have owned one for the experience, but it also puts nostalgia in its proper perspective.

The CB 1100 is an awesome motorcycle. I was one of the people that said if Honda brought it to the states I would buy one and when I got word they were going to import it I put my deposit down. It came in in March of 2013 and I put 8500 miles on my 2013 before Honda brought out a deluxe version with twin exhaust, double wall chrome head pipes, a bigger fuel tank, different instruments w/gear indicator, more shiny bits and a 6 speed trans. I traded my 2013 in on a 2014 dlx. I have put 74,000 trouble free miles on my 14. There are several members of the CB 1100 forum who have put over 100,000 on theirs. I think one with over 135,000 miles. Honda brought out an updated model for 2017 before discontinuing it here in the states, but they continued to make them up until 2020 in other countries. I love my CB 1100.

Very nice. I’ve been considering these now. Private sellers up here want $$$ compared to when new. Old supply and demand I guess is what they are thinking. Sat on z900rs the other day but with standard seat my knees are bent too much. Hopefully cb1100 isn’t the same.

The twin pipes, aluminum rims, and silver engine is THE one!
Let me know if you ever want to sell her.

One of these DOHC Nighthawks was the gateway bike back into riding for me. In 2005 I bought a '93 model after a long hiatus without a motorcycle while I was starting and raising a family.

@the Ferret just registered in the CB1100 owners forum (https://cb1100forum.com/forum/index.php).

Is it my impression or the website is kinda broken (i.e. fails to load some image assets)?

Another question I have: what is the interval you follow to perform the valves inspection? Did you bike need any adjustment after 74K miles?

Yea the forum is old and the new systems which rcognize the https prefix don't recognize the http prefix anymore so a lt of times it comes out in script. If you are able to delete the s on your browser you will or should be able to see it properly. The administrator is supposed to be working on it.

My bike has not required a valve adjustment yet.

did you register as valkrie-rider? I don't see a Savago registered. Suggest you introduce yourself in the new members forum and post up a pic of your bike. We can even tell you if the prev owner was a member of the forum if you post up the last 4 numbers of the vin

That is correct, just tried to make my first post but apparently it requires approval.

As some of you guys may know I worked at a Honda dealer in 2018. American Honda released NOS crated CB1100s in late 2017 that were taking up space in warehouses to dealers on a special basis and we bought 40 of them. A few were red and the rest black. We sold them in a few months for $7495 asking IIRC.

If I could find a new one for $7495 I'd pick up another one just because they are such good bikes
