The Cobra 840 is no longer sold as a current product, in fact we picked it up $49 (Retailed $249) a few years ago. So the price is right in case we lose it, but thus far the suction mount has held on well. The current version is a nicer package and has a 2” rather than 1” color monitor, but again the price is right.

The only feature indont like is the small video clip size which is 10 mins max each. Then it fills up the drive and then loops and writes over the previous files unless you lock it. There’s sufficient options to make it a good dash cam and the video and sound recordings are good 720p or 1080, at 30 or 60 fps.

But what impresses me the most was the video review software. Its excellent for ride analysis with its view controls. It also ties Google Maps in so you can review with real positioning. GPS coordinates, Speed, Gs and compass directions give information needed to understand the ride parameters.

This is a mix of hardware and software, and helped me to see what i want in a dash cam. The software alone is a very good thing that i will measure other cam solutions by. Hopefully the software works with other cams output formats. (It uses MOV and SOS).

I probably will get helmet mounted cam next, like the Sena tube wifi.

Confirm 1080/60fps? I haven't looked closely or extensively but most 'inexpensive' dash cams I've seen are 720/60 and/or 1080/30. I'd like 1080 with a choice of 30 or 60fps.

Yes 1080 HD at 60 fps

get a bigger memory card 8gig burns at 1 gig every 10 mins, then it loops unless you hit the lock button

and the battery capacity for these dash toys (gps, cams, etc) dont last long, so plan on an USB power cable.

so the good news is both the Garmin smartdrive gps and Cobra dash cam can withstand the 122 plus *F direct heat, where the iPhone shuts down after 90 something.
