Dead Battery? or...

I believe it smelled of an oily nature, not electrical (as though in my expertise I can tell the difference). I'll try it again tonight. The smoke did not start with the ignition on, no crackling. It was not immediate, but after a little warming as I let it run for a couple minutes.

Mice wouldn't come into my heated garage in the winter would they?

Take the battery back, obviously they gave you a defective one.

Damn them, I knew that battery was no good. I'll file a complaint with the Department of complaints Department.
