diff oil

2006 st1300
removed the final drive from the pan to freshen up the scabby paint, did not drain the oil before hand and now notice there is oil coming out from where the shaft goes in, the oil appears to be coming from around the nut, this only happens when the casing is tilted down where the shaft enters, should this be happening, there have been no leaks apparent when riding and no loss of oil,

If the 1300 final drive case is designed the same as the 1100, which I suspect it is, then this is normal. There is a small passageway that allows air pressure to move back and forth between the two parts as the swing arm moves, changing the distance slightly that the driveshaft moves forward and back into the case on changing road surfaces. In normal position, there won't be any leaks.

i forgot to mention that this is with the diff on the bench, thanks for that Bush i will have a look at the 1100 microfiche to see if they aresimilar,

I think I know what you mean, the shaft would normally create the seal, with it removed the oil will run out. If you don't mean this come back.

looking at the microfiche the only things i see that can possibly stop the oil coming out are part numbers below, and even then it looks as though the oil seal does not seal on the pinion but on the outside of the joint pinion at the narrow point, link to fiche below.
