I fitted an extender to the rear using an old kitchen swing-bin.

Just cut out the relevant bit and bolted it to the front bottom edge of the original guard. The bottom of the extender stops just at the bottom of the swing-arm and rubs against the rubber mat which is wrapped around the front of the swing-arm with the pimples inwards to allow air to get in there and dry it out. Held in place with cable ties.
