Hi,

My 08 has 24K on it. When I push the bike I hear a grinding noise that was never heard b4. Does that sound like a flange bearing that bit the dust. Anyway of checking without removing the wheel?

Thanks in advance, Rick

Could just be the tires, they will hum when the bike is leaned over.. not a grinding noise though... The best way to check is to remove the wheel... if you can notice movement with the wheel on the bike then best to not ride it.

It sounds like he hears it when he's "pushing" the bike, as in rolling it forward into the garage?
First thing I'd check, is roll it backwards and see if its louder or not, it sounds like it could be a dragging rear brake, or SMC that is showing signs of failing.
As Mellow suggests, don't ride it until you figure out the cause, just to be safe.

Hi Mellow, Hard to explain the noise, I only hear it when I push the bike into the garage. I'll see if the wheel has play in it while on the bike.

Yup, only while pushing it. Does sound like it could possibly be brake related. Not to sound dumb but what is SMC?

Thanks

I agree w/Larry.. it could be the brake grabbing.. some of that is completely normal, like spinning the rear wheel while on the center stand will produce 'some' rubbing of the brake pads and rotor but should still spin some.. if it's not spinning at all or only a few inches then it could be the SMC grabbing.. might be time for a brake bleed in case that hasn't been done in a while.

Secondary Master Cylinder.. it's on the FRONT left caliper and rotates forward when the brake is applied... activating some of the rear brake caliper piston which is part of the 'linked' brake system.. sometimes that plunger will stick and cause the rear brake to stick.

I agree, removing the wheel is the only way to check the bearings properly. You won't feel any play in the back wheel if it is the flange bearings. Keep in mind that there are actually 4 bearings in the rear wheel. 2 wheel bearings and 2 flange bearings. Unless all 4 are really bad you won't feel any play. Even if they were that bad I don't know that you would feel it.

You have to pull the wheel and get your finger in there to know for sure.

I should add that I have seen several flange bearing failures but never a wheel bearing failure on a 1300. Not to say they don't fail but I am a at 103K miles and I know of several other high mileage 1300s that have new flange bearings and original wheel bearings. That said I just did a wheel bearing on an 1100.

Put the bike on the center stand and the noise is coming from the brakes, no drag at all but there isn't much meat left on them.

Thanks everyone for your input, I do appreciate it.

It's a wheel off job, best checked each time you have a tyre change. That's when I found mine were shot. They had been on there for 48,000 miles.

Not a difficult job, as I've just done it.
