Pretty simple mod to do.
First I took a look at the tailight lens:

Placed a straight edge across the top of the light holders, and sharpied a line. Then eyeballed about where I thought 2 lamps would be balanced in the unlit cavity of the housing.

I decided if this wasnt going to work, I wanted pin holes so that I could silicone the housing back closed so water couldn't get in. They're roughly inline with the inboard edges of the wire clips.

Put my flashlight behind the holes to see if I guessed right:

Notice how the light stays in the center portion? Thats what I wanted.

So, now, what kind of bulb:

Need some bulb holders too:
I wont post a link to these, they suck. But I made them work by soldering the bulbs directly to the leads and the gluing the lamp into place. They're just T10 holders, since I went with a 194 style bulb.

Ok these holders call for a 1/2” hole: (this part was nerve wracking). And if you’re ham fisted and break your taillight lens, don’t cry to me. Old plastics are brittle. I GENTLY used a step bit here (hard to see)

I wanted the lights to flash and then stay steady, so I ordered this little jem:

Nicely done! I did a similar, though more involved mod on my 03 1100. Been meaning to post a build thread. Seeing yours though, it's much simpler with excellent results! Thanks for sharing!!

Good job. This should help many riders here.
Easy to follow dialogue and good pics.

Nice!

But why not simply buy the "3 flashes then go solid" bulbs? Five minutes to swap out the bulbs and you're done.

The 1100 has a empty spot between the tail/brake lights. The part he shows lit up is normally not. It is allot different than the 1300 tail light. I like this setup. LED bulbs where not a common item when I did this to mine back in the day.

Because I wanted a third brake light.
I love that mod. spiderman302 and a couple of others have posted about converting the void between the ST1100s tail/brake lights to a brake light. My preference is to make it a third brake as you've done and not a tail/brakelight. Whether it flashes or not it's going from no light to brake light and that give much additional contrast and conspecuity than just another tail/brake light. And it leaves the factory system intact.

In theory an LED bulb should outlive an incandescent bulb. But often cheap LED bulbs give up the ghost sooner than an incandescent might have. So however it's done keeping an add-on separate from factory kit helps keep things simple while adding redundancy and conspicuity.

Now if you could post a vid of its operation on YouTube and link it here that would be greatly appreciated! :D

Well, since you asked, I had already uploaded a vid so here it is. I set a faster flash rate than Hondeltor.
Nice! Thanks. I've got a third brake light that a member built into the back of the factory black plastic pad on the rack. I also have a superbrightleds.com flasher that flashes 4x like Hondeltor's brakelight then 4x fast line yours then stays on with the regular brake lights. One day I'll hook it up.

I used a GS-100A ebay flasher on my 1300. Here's the flash pattern on it. It was around $10.00 but you can get them on AliExpress for about $2
It will work fine on an 1100 as well.

That's what I got from superbirghtleds.com. It was $5 at the time. I ordered it with some other stuff to 'amortize' the shipping.
