Interesting read Forest, thanks!

As in any good research report, the researches recommend further/deeper study into the topic.

Once again...a not so great use of the words "common sense".

Common sense = education plus experience (comes from/is developed by/etc)

If you have a shortage of either....you could be at risk. It's good to formalize issues like this, in the form of study/article...etc. Those without the experience (who can read) can go about "getting" that experience in a whole lot safer way. (after a good read)

Add this....accidents in almost any kind of activity like riding....statistically come at the beginning of the riding experience....or after a person has ridden many, many miles. Yep....those new riders who are clueless....and those older riders who take things for granted. It's great for both groups to have things that remind them about how to stay safe. In the new rider group, encouragement to add experience in a measured way....and for the vets....frequent review of the basics so we can stay on top of our ballgame.

Nor would these same folks you use for example, consider asking others with more experience.....for advice.

I didn't say that everyone would benefit equally, given the opportunity to gather information via book, discussion..etc and in the gathering of necessary experiences that make up what ends up being called...."common sense".

The referred study is a very good overview...with very good links to additional reading. I don't feel it was a waste and recommend it......
