I came across a photo of my father in law‘s 1952 AJS 500cc with a side car. He lived in Australia right after WWII for a time. He is originally from the Sudatenland on the Chech side. He endured living under Hitler’s rule… Soon after the war, communist Russia took over, and anyone who had a German last name was forced to leave the country. So he and his wife fled, and went to Australia. In the early ‘60s, he came to the US… He loved motorcycles, and I enjoyed talking with him about them.

AJS was bought out by Matchless Motorcycle. This one is either ‘51 or ‘52 AJS. Sure would love to have one now…

My Father-in-Law was also a cool dude in his day. Here he is on one of his bikes (don't recall make or model - someone here will know) in the late 40's - early 50's.

These were probably when his was living in Broken Hill, Australia. https://maps.app.goo.gl/X14ni12DQjm1wcH27

A pretty sharp looking dude also.
Top bike may be a Matchless, bottom one an Ariel Square Four?

Yes a Matchless.
Bottom bike is not an Ariel Sq. Four, I think it is an inline twin(fore and aft). I believe this bike was manufactured in Sweden, it is shaft drive - I have a friend and collector that has one - I can't remember the make though.

Engines during this period were literal works of art. They always attracted my attention first.

I suppose the same thing could be said of exhaust systems. I wouldn't be the one saying it. What fish did the manufacture have in mind? It looks like the Chrome Whiskey Tangois Foxtrotus. Not common but similar species have been found in other waters.

Likely Mr Norton had a wayward son in art school who looked over the shoulder of Mr Velocette's kid?
