Has anybody tried making their own carb pre-filter?

Wanting to know if anybody has tried making their own carb pre-filter? And if you did, what did you use? I know they are cheap, but the open cell foam that they are made from seems as if it does very little.

I made one once out of an air filter from a lawnmower. I used a razorblade to cut a thin slice off the filter and then cut it to shape with scissors.

I make mine out of an old T-Shirt. Just cut a patch to cover the Bottom and snap it together.
50K+ miles using this type of filter.

Same here. I just installed another recently.
Got my 'new' 1100 home and checked it over well. The secondary filter was missing so I got a foam filter from a lawnmower shop, pressed the housing into it like a cookie cutter, trimmed around the impression with scissors (outside of the impression border so the fit is snug), and sliced into sections with a razor blade.
