I got the idea for this off of sport-touring.net because I was looking for a way around the $70-80 commercial version. Basically cost less that $10. Works great! The sport-touring.net version recommended the 10MM led. The radio shack guy talked me down to a 5mm and I'm glad he did because it is very bright. Ingredients are one mono audio cable, one LED light, a LED socket to put the light in, a little solder and a little flux.

Cut the audio cable to length
Mount the LED in the LED holder
Solder the long wire on the LED to the insulated wire on the audio cable
Solder the non-insulated LED wire to the short led wire.
brush on the liquid electrical tape (I used a few coats)
VIOLA! You have an LED that can plug into the audio jack on your radar detector.

Time invested, about 20 minutes.

Here's a video of the power on indicators:

The brilliant thing (so to speak) is that the volume on your radar detector controls the brightness of the LED.
