how do i know if valves shims need doing ?

how do i know if valves shims need doing on my st1300 ?
is there any signs that it may need doing noises or any thing ?
i have about 35000 miles on mine
but not realy sure on service history

With no records, you should assume that nothing has been done and act accordingly.

At least 2 Honda dealers in the Jacksonville area can tell you if the bike was serviced there. They need the VIN number. I only know of these two because they both checked bikes for me.

Otherwise I don't think the engine will give any signs of a valve being too tight until damage may occur.

Most time clearances will tighten up so no noises to give a clue, until damage occurs. Once it has been checked, redoing them is less critical as the bike can go a long way before any shims actually need doing.
