I have a dedicated android GPS device (old chinese one, with android version 6.0). It almost fit my requirements, but sometimes it was irritating me with lags and freezes while using google maps on it. Also, it was a problem to share links to waypoints to GPS unit from my phone. So I found a way to convert it to android auto system without replacing the device itself, maybe, someone find it useful too. I suppose it will fit for any android phone or tablet you want to use as a dedicated nav device without mounting your precious phone on handlebar. Didn't test it with apple car auto (not a fan of apple devices)

What to do:

On the phone:
1. Install android auto app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.projection.gearhead&pcampaignid=web_share (it may be already installed in the system, as it was on my Galaxy S22)
2. Go to the app settings menu and tap several times on Version. This should enable developers setting in the app:

3. Go to three dot menu in the up - right corner of the app, tap on "start head unit server"

4. Create wifi mobile hotspot

On the GPS device (tablet/ another phone you want to use as dedicated GPS)
1. Install Headunit Reloaded Emulator HUR https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gb.xxy.hr
2. Run the app, and go to settings:

3. In connectivity menu open wifi connection mode, choose "Manually connect to android Auto Headunit server:

4. Connect to wifi spot, shared earlier on the phone
5. Restart Headunit Reloaded Emulator - it should connect to the phone:

Now you can use all features of google android auto)
