NC State troopers ride RT's and wear protective gear and modular helmets. Local and sheriffs Dept's wear no protective gear and wear 1/2 helmets and ride Harleys. Although I did see a Charlotte motor officer on his HD wearing a modular this AM, which was the first time I've ever seen a Charlotte cop wearing a full face helmet.

CMPD all wore modulars when they were riding BMW's. Now that they have switched back to Harley's I haven't really noticed what type of helmet they wear. The cops riding the little dual sports in Charlotte also wear modulars.
From an article I read years ago in a cop magazine, when I was a deputy:
1. The officer can hear better.
2. In case the officer gets into a physical altercation with a subject.
