Well, got back from a good ride yesterday with my friend Andy. I rode Frost for the day and checked my rear tire when I got home. At 4,563 I am to the wear bars in some parts of the center of the rear, and the front shows wear patterns also. This is the first set of the Avon Ultras that I have 'finished' off. I got about the same mileage on the 'regular' Storms (4895, 4913) and was hoping to see some improvement with the Ultras. I usually got 7,000+ out of the old Avon Azaros so I reckon I'm back to trying the Metzler Z6s again. I used get around 7,000+ out of the Metzlers also, so I hope the new 'improved' ones aren't improved like the Storm Ultras. ;-) Makes me glad I put fresh Storms on SweetTreat before I went to Canada (had 4,450 on them), cause I would have been out of tire if I hadn't. I guess there must be something wrong with throttles on my ST1100s ... :D

Just back from my late summer trip, new Avons when I left (ultra front, regular rear.) 10,600 on the pair, rear is near toast, front has a few miles left tho the left side is worse than the right (common on my bikes???)

I'm going back to the Bridgestone 020R. 15,000 miles and handling is fine despite them being bias.

10563 miles on a set of Avon Storms Ultra II's No cupping.
still about 2000 miles to go. Must be the cold Canadian climate, although many of the miles where in PA, VT, NH, & NY.

I've been a faithful Metzler Z6 owner for many years & will never go back.

These Avon's work for me & my ST

Just put an ultra II on the rear to replace the storm that was there. Had to change due to a quick flat at 65 mph in the rain. A little pucker time until I got it stopped. Got 8600 mi out of it and replaced the Front from orig. avon storm with 15000 on it 4000 mi. ago with ultra II. Hope the ultra II last as long.

020s are radials.

I like the BT020 tire as well - good performance, great mileage.

2 respectful corrections...

George - I *think* it's the "M" code for the BMW K1200LT we like, not the "R".

DDuelin - yes, the OEM replacement BT020 BattleAx replacement tire IS a radial, but some of us have been running the "M" version which is a heavier carcass tire spec'ed for the BMW K1200LT as mentioned above, and THAT specific version is a bias tire.

Here's a link to a moto-tire page that spells it all out:

By golly, you are right. I knew they made a OEM K1200LT tire that was rated 73W but I did not know it was bias construction.

Thanks for the clarifications, guys. Yes, the BMW spec bias is the one I like, great mileage. I'll call Tim on Monday and order my next one.

My rear Avon Storm Ultra gave me about 6,000 miles, and then catastrophic failure Saturday. There was not, as far as I can tell, any road hazard involved. Plenty of tread left, but whether it was from the failure itself, or the rolling down from 70mph on a flat tire, the tire is destroyed. All of the damage though is on the left side of the tire, which leaves me thinking the damage is from the failure, not the subsequent run-while-flat.
