The highlights...

Overview of the main features of the 2010 R 1200 RT:

  • New, even more dynamic engine with two overhead camshafts per cylinder
  • Maximum torque increased to 88 lb-ft at 6,000 rpm, maximum output remaining at 110 hp at 7,750 rpm

Just curious, with the DOHC head complicate valve adjustments? Never even seen it done, but I've often read valve adjustments are "easy" on boxers.

Wow, I like it! Of course, I couldn't afford an 05-09 model, so the 2010 is not a possibility either. But it sure is pretty!

psssst...don't tell my 04' RT I said that. LOL!

Just buy one of each, then rotate them each day starting with Monday. That way the only decision is which bike to ride on Sunday!

Without having a close look at each of them in person and just seeing the articles, I would have a very tough decision. Probably go with the RT, only because I know how comfortable my current ride is for me.

BMW has long given bike weights "dry," so maybe now they're giving fuel economy ratings with actual fuel in the tank. ;)

I thinking that here is a farkle potential for the ST that I have never even considered. :)

I noticed that the tank was back to 6.6 gallons, which is the same as my 04' R1150RT. I get 50 miles per gallon with mine, so I have about a 300+ mile range, which is plenty for me.

I can't do the conversion for what they say you get per gallon/tankful with the new model, but it should be enough to get you from point A to point B. I still don't know why they backed off from the 7.1 gallon tanks of the 05/09 models, though.

The current RT boxer engine (hex head) uses what BMW calls a mid cam or high cam. This has push rods and screw adjuster rocker arms. Few minutes a side to adjust.

The overhead cam version would use shim and bucket like the ST. Easier access then the ST but pretty much the same. Interval will most likely increase from 6000 miles (current) to ?

Further research indicates the use of semi hemispherical shims and cam followers. The cams might not have to be removed for adjustment.
Move or remove the followers to accomplish adjustment.

I like the looks and will for sure shag a ride. Appears to be the same weight as the previous version or about 570lbs ready to go without bags. I wonder what the real world economy will be.......looks less than 05-09 version but nevertheless as you say should have plenty of range. The new VFR (like the K1300S) only has about a 5 gallon tank.........no word on the ST variant yet.
