I just came back from a sad visit to my hometown in Maine.
(My mother will be 93 this spring and still lives there by herself in the house my father built.)
My 85-something aunt married a local 92 year old 3 months ago. I have known them both since I was a child. They were both well aware that at that age their time together was a blessing. He went into the hospital a couple weeks ago for a hip replacement and mentioned that his stomach hurt .....
It seems he was riddled with cancer and started failing fast while there. He came home last Friday to spend his last days at home. He is pretty much comatose now, the pain eased with drugs and was not really aware we were there today.
My only wish is that he soon realizes his work is done and he can leave, he doesn't have to fight the pain.
