Anyone have any recommendations for a good radar detector?

There is so much new technology out there lately, I am not sure which is the better ones to get for my ST.

One more question - do you need a shelf, or can it be mounted a different way?

Thanks

I have a magnetic radar detector Ram Mount from MotorcycleLarry that I use... others have velcro'd it to the dash... others have installed a dash... others have made custom holders for the dash. ;)

:::::with this post where austin will brag,,, the chance of a ticket will increase 384% now:::::

Ok,,, What do I use???

I set my,,, WONDERFUL cruise control,,, (((Thanks again Curt and Biddyman))) at 7 or 8 over the limit...

Someone passes me??? I follow them at a distance... When I see them hit their brake lights,,, I back off... They speed up,,, I follow...

Someone passes me,,, and passes the leader??? SHAZZAM!!! THEY,,, become the leader now...

I have used this "Radar" detection for over 14 years... I have never,,, had a ticket in 14 years...

So,,, you think I just ride slow do you??? ;)

# 1 ~~~ Well,,, try riding from Green Bay Wisconsin,,, to Casey Illinois 420 miles,,, THROUGH,,, Chicago,,, in 6 hours,,, 15 minutes... AND,,, this is with 70,000 drunk Packer fans all heading south after a Football game...

Course,,, once in a while,,, you might ride a few 100 feet in the back seat of a Cadillac but,,, lets stay on the subject here please...

# 2 ~~~ Try riding from Casey Illinois,,, to Leadville Colorado,,, 1,140 miles,,, in 16 hours...

# 3 ~~~ Try riding almost all 2 lane from Hannibal Missouri,,, to about 90 miles east of Durango Colorado,,, a 1098 mile day... ALL,,, done 30 minutes before sun rise,,, to 20 minutes after sunset... :D

To this day,,, I still think this would be a far harder/faster ridden day than any 1,500 mile day you could ever ride... I went,,, THROUGH,,, about 200 towns that day... THROUGH I SAY!!! :D

# 4 ~~~ Then,,, throw in about 80 trips between the Farm in Illinois and Austin Texas where I "AVERAGED" making those trips in 14 1/2 hours for the 980 mile trip,,, in a Tahoe/Yukon... Best time,,, E V E R??? 12 hrs,,, 48 minutes... a 76 mph AVERAGE... :bow1:

Again... All done,,, without any radar... :)

You Don't Need No Steeking Radar Detector!!!:D

:::::you can almost HEAR,,, the speeding tickets being written with austins real name on them can't you:::::

ACL the only problem with the rabbit is,you may be the rabbit, how many times do you see a vehicle comming up from behind you going like a bat out of hell only to follow you on your backside for ever with plenty of places to pass. People are followers for the most part, aren't many that want to lead. Just my observations anyway.:D :biker:

I am using the Whistler Pro-3450. It's a two piece unit. This keeps it out of the weather and out of sight from getting stolen. I have mine in the fairing pocket and the antenna behind the plastic of the front fairing.

There are no distractions from LEDs or having to look at the unit. It speaks plain english to let me know what band and signal strength with beeps. I hear it in my helmet speakers through my Autocom Active-7-Smart and my PitStop4u.com PS4U-003.

Hey, This is my technique!!! :p: But it is what I pratice. I can never confince SHMBO, that the expense is worth it. I've used this technique for most of my life.
Have I gotten a ticket? Yeah, but only two in the last 17 years. The first one was at night and I was the only one coming in to a small town - speed limit changed from 50 to 30... on one side of the road... . The second ticket, me not thinking... down hill in Ohio at 2am during Ohio's "speeder crack down" this May. This was during the Mason-Dixon 20-20 36 hour rally. I had passed and became the "leader" - because I was thinking about gas, my next destination, and the effing DEER!!

That said, I have been looking of and on for a radar detector and helmet setup. Virginia makes it hard, if a trooper finds you with one they take it ( and I've hear make you drive over it ), ticket you for your offence and the illeagel device. Points and fines - and judges aren't very forgiving here....

Here's a pic of my Valentine One mounted on the dash using a cheap piece of balsa wood that I "fabricated" to fit. Works like a charm. I haven't gotten fancy and done the Autocomm thing so I can hear it, but the way it's mounted the flashing lights catch my attention easily. Off the highway, I can hear it fairly well. At some point, I'll spring for the mixer and have the radar detector, Quest 2 and iPod audio available.
