I use an old Cobra, it's beat to hell, but works fine,

no detector is good for impulse radar like the federal Natchez Trace Rangers use.....

looking at my detector helps me remember to SLOW DOWN!!!.....

I have a Bell RX65. I'd never owned a radar detector till I bought my ST in 2004. I decided quickly that I better buy one. It is attached to a BLM dash shelf with velcro and plugged into a BMW style power receptacle. I remove it when it rains heavily. It is somewhat protected by the windshield. I run audio thru my Autocom system. I was stopped for speeding the one time I did not have the audio connected. I do not believe that it would last long if I left it on the bike all the time. I believe that the temperature and humidity fluctuations would not be good for it. I have at least 35,000 miles on this RD with no problems.

Passport 9500ix here on a Turbo Tom side dash mount, wired into my Autocom. Has paid for itself, may times. Not that I'm a speed demon but sometimes I'm taking in the landscape and forget to look down at the speedo. It is also very nice to have the GPS feature to remember where the false alarms are so it won't go off again. Not sure if I would put a cover over it. I always take it off when parked unless I can watch the bike while eating pie. I just drape my coat over the shield which hides the detector. I would take it off and store away during rain since I won't be traveling at high speed anyway.

You might try checking some of the radar equipment test sites like Speedzones.com or radartest.com (not sure about those URLs, might want to google them) and see how that equipment stacks up. It's going to be hard to beat the performance of your 9500i though. I had my "i" upgraded to "ix" specification which allows internet updating of the traffic camera location data base. I don't know if the database includes Canada or not but the automatic false blocking feature contained in the upgrade is nice.

I have the ix connected to my StarCom unit as the priority input. No way you'll miss an alert that way.

Thanks guys, it looks like legal speeding has the answer.

As far as alert systems, which would you prefer ?

This one http://www.marcparnes.com/Visual_Alert.htm

Or this one http://www.legalspeeding.com/HARD.htm

Or is there some other alternative I have not seen.

I'd love to be able to mount the 9500i inside one of the fairing pockets or something like that. It would render it useless for laser, however it would work fine for radar.

A downside to that is not being able to see it and having to rely on a wire to your helmet and a speaker to use the voice warning etc.

Having it mounted on the bike would be OK I guess, with one of the plastic cases on a small dash shelf would be better than a handlebar stalk mount I think.

Any other ideas or suggestions ?

By the way I really like the totally hidden systems Escort is selling, but they sure want a lot for them.

Larry.
