I have noticed that when my ST1300 (2005, non-ABS) is up on its center stand and the rear wheel is spun by hand I can hear a light grating noise...like something is rubbing. On closer inspection, it appears that one of the rear brake pads is rubbing against the rotor...as if it is not releasing from the rotor.

Is this normal? I'm guessing its not. Have read a bit here and I'm vaguely aware of a systemic issue with the rear brake piston hanging up. Is this what I have got going?

Joe,

What is the rational behind having the brake pad drag on the rotor when the brake has not been applied?

Beats me... but it's done it on every bike I've ever had.

If the pads retreated too far it would need a decent pump of the brake lever to get the brakes to work - not good. The pads should not be dragging enough to heat up the rotor though.
