I need to buy a C-spanner to be able to adjust my preload, the Honda one isnt available over here so I figured I would look online, found this one and was wondering if anyone could confirm whether one of the ends is similar in size to the honda supplied C-spanner

If you have the tool kit that came with the ST1100, have you checked in it? It had one. I can measure mine tonight, if I can remember! ;)

Unfortunately I didnt get any tool kits with the bikes so don't have a way to adjust the preload, thankyou for offering to check the dimensions

I managed to pick up the exact same one second hand using your photos as a guide, it fits perfectly, thankyou

It was very rusty but a quick trip to the blasters and a coat of paint and its better than new

Maybe try grinding the edge of the "prong" on your C spanner so that it is a slightly sharper angle where it sits in the slot on the adjustment ring, you need to be quick and not let the C spanner heat up or else you will need to re heat treat it ! I have used a dremel before ( as opposed to an angle grinder) . Also, apply some oil to the adjustment rings beforehand if it looks dry (i.e. ungreased)

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious here, there is the rebound adjuster on one side (top mounting) and the shaft locking screw on the other side. The shaft locking screw has been 'peened' into the mounting , you can see the radial marks, this wont move at all (and you don't want it to !!)

Assuming, you are trying to move the rebound adjustment screw, you need to try it clockwise and anti-clockwise until you work out where it is (it could be fully in or fully out) . The screw slot is wide and you might want to grind a bit or screwdriver to get a good tight fit (or get a Wheeler gun screwdriver bit set: these have just about every thickness of slot bit you could want)
