Why do all the new bikes have to have a beak? What is the engineering reason for that design? I want to ride a motorcycle not fly a bird. Good Grief.

Agreed. No engineering reason that I can see Chuck. IMO, it is a design cue that BMW first popularized on the GS and so an adventure bike 'must' have that visual design cue to be considered an adventure bike. I suspect that the GS beak originally was taken as a design cue from motocross bikes, to accentuate that the GS is an adventure/offroad bike, where the front fender was actually that high above the front wheel (large clearance for offroading and for mud to sling free). But then they add a front fender just above the front wheel too!

+1. The nostrils on the MultiStrada appear to be functional (air intake) but I'm not so sure about the rest. Is a beak supposed to keep mud from splattering up on the rider, like the huge plastic fenders on MotoX bikes? The new GS takes beakdom to a comical extreme. I don't get beaks.

I thought the beak worked like a vortex generator on a supersonic jet and assisted in keeping the bike stable as it is breaking the sound barrier.

Only if it's on a [-]treadmill[/-] conveyor belt. (Man, how did I blow that one?)

Re: Replacement for the Honda ST1300 in 2014?

I live in New England...the Kawasaki dealer I bought my KLR from wouldn't even do the exhaust recall because I had a tall windshield. Yamaha dealer didn't want to warranty a seat on my snowmobile (common issue with water getting through to the cushion on 2003 RX-1s) because I had a heated shield plug installed.
I have not heard if it was passed, but a year ago, the EU was considering making a law that made it ILLEGAL to use aftermarket parts or do any alterations to ANY part of a motorcycle. That would include mounting any tires other than the OEM tire brand and model.

Re: Replacement for the Honda ST1300 in 2014?

I know this is of no means (Honda doesn't read these forums ;)) But I would like to see a poll started listing improvements mentioned here and have us readers vote on it for a week. The five highest voted on improvements will be selected and we can figure the added cost to the "improved upgraded modern" ST1300.
I would like to suggest what I think are good examples:
#1 electronic cruise control
#2 tapered bearings for the steering head
#3 Quality 1 piece needle flange bearing for rear wheel
#4 self cancelling turn signals
#5 electronic throttle control
Consider that any ST13 update or upgrade that might be released in 2014 was probably designed and engineered 2 or 3 years ago. So if you want to publish a wishlist now, we should get Mellow to edit the title of this thread from "2014" to "2017". ;)

Re: Replacement for the Honda ST1300 in 2014?

Popular credit for the first beaked bike goes to the Suzuki DR750 (1988). BMW's 1993 R1100GS used the beak to funnel air across the oil cooler housed in the base of the beak which also functioned as a high fender. The oil cooler has moved around in succeeding GS models but the styling cue caught on as adventure bikes grew into a class onto their own. I think it is fashion more than function.

Re: Replacement for the Honda ST1300 in 2014?

Beak is the most important advancement in motorcycle development. It comes from Formula 1 racing technology.
It reduces air drag in high speed, it makes the bike aerodynamically stable, helps taking the corners faster, it acts as a buffer in frontal collisions, prevents huge mud and rocks coming from the front tires, it is a good coffee holder or tool holder surface when you service your bike. You can duct tape a flashlight to it if your headlight goes broken. You can use it as a snow shovel, heck you can even use it for a real shovel for a short time. You can put fake teeth underneath the beak to make it look like a monster. Without the beak the bike is not real....
What I will do to it is the same thing I would do to a violent rooster, clipping it...

Re: Replacement for the Honda ST1300 in 2014?

A quick update on the poll on VFR1200T pricing. With a total of 50 responses (obviously a small sample size):

92% of respondents would want to pay less than $18k for a new ST13 replacment.

46% would want to pay less than $15k.

8% of respondents would be willing to pay more than $18k, which would put the replacement into more of a premium brand range (more expensive with smaller distribution). Generally, people would expect to pay less for an ST13 replacement, than for an equivalent BMW. Also, people would likely expect an ST13 replacement to be cheaper than a similarly equipped Gold Wing.

Given that almost half of the respondents would like to see an ST13 replacement priced under $15k, I don't see any way that Honda could have made money on the VFR1200T, given the shrinking market for sport touring bikes.

And given that 873 people (at the time I wrote this) have viewed the poll, only 17% of them have voted. One could read this any way one wanted to, but one interpretation is that not that many people are interested in a VFR1200T replacement for the ST13. Maybe that's why it got shelved (if it ever existed at all).

Sorry Glen but all your assumptions are based on such little data you can't possibly come up with any real conclusions.

50 responses - I don't even thing Ferrari would sell their cars if they only had 50 definite customers.

873 'views' is simply that - not 873 different members but 'view'.. if you look at the poll 15 times, that's 15 views.

Honda is going to do what makes sense to Honda. We all pretty much thought Honda was crazy when they came out w/ the Fury... it's still there. :)

I realize that. Call it an educated guess.

WOW, I thought only my profession used a dart board, that's how we quote the price of aircraft fuselage sections, much more accurate then the cost per pound, it takes less time and it gives me more time to hijack ST-Owners threads .
Sorry, you can have your thread back.
